Subject: What sounds better for exhaust systems?? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1995 Dodge Dakota 5.2 V-8. I am going to put a cat back system on it, but I dont know what brand to go with. I am stuck on either Borla or Flowmaster. Which one do you think sounds better? Does anyone have either one on their V-8 Dakota? Please let me know your preferences and why.
Thank you, Casey

Message: I have a Flowmaster catback system on my 94' 318. I adapted it from the kit for the 97'. Anyway, I like it. It is the "american thunder series" (whatever that means) and I think it has a nice tone. It's seems to be similar volume to a 50 series and no where close to the 50. It is still quiet enough to fool people into thinking it's a stock exaust when idling but still has a nice low note.

Message: If you want it loud and vibrating all the time get the flows, Borla will growl when you want it to. I got tired of my flowmasters, they drove me nuts, so I went with a magnaflow. I can now hear exhaust notes not just the loud wooshing and vibrating.

Message: Ill second the no muffler idea. Go to meineke get a 3" cat back pipe with no muffler. It will sound bad a$$ on the outside but not annoying on the inside.

Message: Have a muffler shop install a piece of pipe in
place of the muffler and drive it for a week.
I bet you will never go back and have a muffler of
any brand put back in it place.
And it sounds sweet and barely legal !!

Message: Some mufflers create more resonance then not having a muffler. So it is possible to have less noise in the cab without a muffler.

Message: As long as you live in a place that won't arrest you for no muffler, like a small country town or somethin. A big city like Dallas they can take you to jail or slap you w/ a big fine. I have dual flowmaster race mufflers and it was kinda annoying at first but I got used to it, people have often asked if I'm using glasspacks, so if you want the glasspack sound but still want some backpressure and torque try the Flowmaster 10 series (beware...they are loud!!)

Message: I had a '95 SLT 5.2 w/5 speed. Running Doug Thorley headers, stock pipe from Y to stock CAT, I went 3" exit on CAT to an Ultra FLO round stainless muffler (about 10" in diameter, 18" long). Best sounding exhaust I've ever had (over my 40 series flowmaster too). BUT-- when I changed to a high flow cat, and 3" from the cat to the header Y-pipe. I lost a TON of low end (sounded like a Winston Cup car). I then changed the Ultra-Flo to a Dynomax Superturbo. VERY quiet until you got on it, then it make a very nice exhaust note. Torque and HP went up considerably with that setup. Not the exact sound I wanted, but it was the best HP builder.
I believe the wav file is still on the www.dakota-truck.net webpage somewhere.
