Subject: Rattling/Grinding noise... IP: Logged
Message: Since I bought the truck about almost two years ago (1997 Dakota CC 5.2L 4x4), there's been this rattling/grinding noise, almost like the sound of a chain. It only occurs under medium acceleration. If you accelerate really easily, you don't get the noise, same if you floor it. But pressing the gas enough to where it shifts at around 3k, I always hear this rattling noise, like something is loose. It's been there since I bought the truck, so I don't know if anything is actually wrong with it. Anyone know? Thanks in advance.

Message: I'd expect pinging to get worse as it was floored; unless its dropping a gear then...

Message: DaKMan515, Mine is making the same noise for the past 6months. 2000 QC 5.9 auto 4X4 137K. At first I looked for loose or cracked heat shields, then adjusted the tranny bands (and serviced), then replaced the harmonic balance (shifted rubber), then replaced the tensioner and idler pulleys. I don't know what to think....it shifts fine, but sounds like someones rattling a can of pebbles under my truch at 3,000-3,200 RPM.

Message: Had a noise coming from the front end of my chevy 2500 one time - kind of sounded like a washer ringing- looked could find nothing loose- turns out later it was some front end piece coming loose and the threads got ruined so it had to be replaced. It only rand at certain rpms - probably due to harmonics and vibration at that rpm level. But at least it didn't have bad ball joints lol

Message: It sounds like the lava rock inside the catalytic converter has broken up. With the engine cold, crawl under the truck, and shake/ hit the cat. converter with the side of your fist. If it rattles, get a new cat.
