Message: I took off my intake manifold and was surprised to see how rough it looked. I was thinking I'd see nice clean ports. The runner openings were really rough and the EGR tube at the bottom is big.
I was also surprised when I looked down the intake of my stock heads - there is casting goober down the center of each intake. Talk about turbulence and drag! I am thinking of taking off the heads and cleaning them up. Do you think its worth the effort?

I meant - would the trouble of taking the heads off and the expense of the head gaskets and the time it takes to do the work be worth the potential gains? What might the gains be?

Message: I had my heads off to change a head gasket. It is alot of work, and is quite messy. I personally could not spend the time to clean the ports because my truck is my only vehicle in the winter.
That said, I personally think that unless you have to take the heads off for some other reason, the gains you will see would not be worth the effort.
If you have lots of extra time, and a good workshop, the gains may outweigh the hastle.
