Message: I have 140,000 miles on my 4.7 and it doesnt burn a drop of oil. My friends 98 dakota with the 318 has 107 thousnad miles and burns a quart every 3000 miles.

Message: Well, I think we can beat this topic into the ground for the rest of the year, but it really comes down to this... You are comparing apples and oranges saying the 318 is the longest lasting motor. Yeah, its been around since the 70's I believe, and the 287 has only been around for a handful of years--so you can't really compare longevity. I've had both engines and am partial to both. Sure, they both have their quirks, but the 4.7L is a dang fine engine and shouldn't be knocked. Over the next 5 to 10 years we can expect the 4.7L to be tweaked, prodded, and improved much like the 318 was since its conception. My uncle had an old Duster with a 318 in it I believe and it got a whopping 9 to 10mpg on a good day. The 318 has come a long way since then, but unfortunately it can't really go much more as far as efficiency. Personally, I agree that the 318 is bulletproof and it will always be, but I also like the 4.7L engines and they have performed and lasted amiably thusfar.

Message: The 318 Duster I had got about 18 mpg; don't know why you believe your uncle's is only good for 9-10... unless it has some major issues.

Message: Bleh.. My typo. It was 1970 or 71 Challenger he drove around all the time that got the sucky gas mileage and it got 10 to 11 mpg on a good day. Guess because it is a heavier car? Not sure what carb he had on it. The Duster he had was a killer light car, but his got about 15 mpg. It was one of the cars I learned to drive in... oooo.. big mistake for him. ;)

Message: what do you guys think about all the new motors coming out. like fords 4.6 5.4 sohc chevys 4.8, 5.3, 6.0? dodges 3.7 sohc,5.7? hemi which i have heard from people that say it can take some abuse.
we have a ford 4.6 and at a 70k miles it burns a qt in between oil changes. the ford 5.4 is a joke when it comes to power. chevys motors seem to be pretty good units. i hope that dodges hemi's 3.7 and 4.7 hold up like the 3.9 318 and 360 did. but what do you guys think???

Message: Other than all the spark plugs the Hemi takes, I wouldn't mind having one myself... Hemi in my Dakota.. *drool* I've rarely seen a "Floored" engine last that long or hold up well.. from old to new ones I think I've seen maybe two. A Ford engine that I can think of that could take a lot of crap was the 302. Also, we had a 87 Bronco II w/ the 3.0L V6 that could take a beating too.. was running strong at 170k when we sold it. The new Ford engines are a joke. I am a fan of the Chevy 5.3L engine. Those things can haul arse and are made really well IMHO.

Message: IXNA on the heavy car/bad mileage. I routinely averaged combo city/highway 19mpg in my '69 Charger (quite a bit heavier than a Challenger) with 318/727 tranny/2.76 gears, and I have never been considered a light-footed driver. Currently, in the 4WD Ramcharger (over 5,000lbs and the aerodynamics of a brick) I'm bringing back to life, also with a 318, I manage 12mpg, and this will improve as things get sorted out. I managed 16mpg in this same truck a few years ago.

HAH, some engines jsut do better than others, even 318 vs 318
out 318 ram charger (85) got 9-10 on a GOOD tank
average was like 8
pull 2 snowmobiles and you were lookin at 6

Message: Yeah, dunno. Now when I'm really "on" it a lot it'll drop off to 10mpg in its present condition, but more normal driving (with the occasional romp) yields a solid 12mpg.

maybe i should have ditched my dakota for something a little easier to lift
but that dakota is fun, 3000 lbs of loud powerful truck :D
oh well
i should have gotten something that gets better gas milage, not 12 in the winter when im havin fun, 13 or so normal

Message: Yeah, me too. There's just something about them. I tell ya, you never hear about a Ramcharger flipping over in traffic like some other SUVs out there.
