Subject: I need motor swap info.. IP: Logged
Message: i was lookin at a dakota in the junk yard. it has a 5.2 V8 in it, and im thinking of pulling the motor to swap into my 87.
i am tryin to determine if this is a magnum. i was told it wasnt but i want to make sure.
some info on the truck in the junk yard...
- its a 91, (manufacture date : 2 / 91)
- the VIN number is : 1B7GL23Y8MS283549
- the motor has the coil on the firewall
- it has the numbers 6089 & 572 on the valve covers
- it has a serpentine belt setup.
- the motor mounts are under the center exhaust port
- it has a throttle body.
- it is connected to an A500 (with push button over drive)
Info on my truck
- 87 3.9
- 4wd
- 904 tranny
id like to keep my tranny, and use the fuel injection of the 5.2
what would it take to drop the v8 into mine?

Message: 91 is not a magnum. The magnum v8 was introduced with the 92 model year. Coil is mounted on the passenger side of the block in the front. In addition, a premag engine is TBI, so it only has injectors in the throttle body, not in the intake. Fairly obvious if you look at it.

Message: yes i know. but the block has the mounting ears in the same spot as the magnums. and the premags had the ears on the 1st set of cylinders. thus raising concern.
it is 2 injectors in the throttle body.
i was told that premags werent serpentine set ups, and this one is.

Message: If it has 2 injectors in the TB then it's premag, Magnums were MPFI, multi-port fuel injection, 8 injectors one for each cylinder

Message: yes. but can some one explain why the motor mounts are magnum style? under the middle cylinders, not the front?

Message: Mopar did the same thing in the 80's when roller cams were being phased in. At some point they had to go with the newer block that had provisions for roller cams, even if that particular engine came with a flat tappet cam. Looks like they'd stopped casting the LA blocks, and just started using the new Magnum casting (essentially an LA block with dual engine mount points and a different tappet angle...the old-style ears, and the new triad points in the low-center of the block), and also started using the Magnum-style mounts as well....easier since the V6 was this way all along. (The 3.9 was derived from the 318, but it's a bit more complicated than just shaving off 2 cylinders. So, when designed, it got the mid-block mounts from the beginning. It was only later when V8 power became a reality did Mopar re-tool the V8 block.) This made the roll-out for the new Magnum 318 for 1992 that much smoother.
