Subject: 318 to 360 swap trouble IP: Logged
Message: So I work at a shop and this guy tows in his 92 dakota with the 360 (from an unknown car) partially in it. He beat the crap out of the k-member trying to get it in. So I tell him it needs a different oil pan and pickup tube. When I tried putting in the oil pan (from a 99 360 dakota) it wouldnt fit. It looks like it is hitting the oil pump. Has anyone ever heard of this or am I just not pushing hard enough?

Message: i dont know about this exact application but i do know something... i did a engine swap(many times) in a s-10 before, and they have more than one kinda oil pan. one for 2wd, and one for 4wd. you would never fit the 2wd pan on a 4wd engine unless you change the sump, because it was way longer. the pan was deeper in the back, and shallower up front to go around the front differential. that might be the problem your having. look at more than one kinda pan. thats also why the have different numbers for the engine that are in the same exact truck, but one is 4x4 and one is 4x2.

Message: Did the same swap to an '89 Shelby Dakota. The engine was from a 2001 Ram, and had a deeper rear sump than the 318 it was replacing. You need to support the engine at the rear to keep it from dropping as you continue to lower the front of the engine. So basically, lower it in at an angle, then once it gets tight, level out the engine and the pan will clear as it settles. It'll fit.
