Subject: Auto Trans issues IP: Logged
Message: When accelerating normally the tranny on my 99 Dakota 318 shifts smoothly and normally. When I push her down the shifts seem early (around 3900- 4200 depending)are hard and rough. Gas mileage is not good either. Its almost like the computer is not advancing timing when hard acceleration. Any help is appreciated.

Message: So basically you are losing power. Under normal conditions you are ok but when you load the engine it boggs down on you? Am I correct? Need some more info on this one.

Message: That's right...It does not perform the way it should when under load. It almost seems the timing is not being advanced by the computer. It does not hold a gear long enough to power up to the limt before it shifts really hard (almost a clunk)

Message: Tranny fluid is Amsoil 100% synthetic with tranyy cooler and its as tight as a drum. Not a mechanical tranny problem for sure. The Plugs and wires are almost new with new cap and coil. This quirk has been there as long as I've had the truck and I wonder if its a computer problem. It also has a ping when you have it under load whether or not regular or premium gas is in it.

Message: I think I would check for an exhaust restriction. Could be wrong.

Message: Doesn't sound like a PCM problem. Have you had the governor pressure checked (with a gauge compared to what the DRB reads)? They are known for the sensor going bad and giving false pressure readings. Might be something to think about. I've seen them start out in 2nd gear due to this problem as well as a bunch of other symptoms. Early shifts being one of them.
