Subject: 4.7 liter oil viscosity? IP: Logged
Message: Forgot to ask in my original post, I am currently using mobil-1 full synthetic oil. It seems that 5w/30w or 10w/30w will both work. The 5w/30w does have a bigger temp range for colder climates.
What range do you use in you Dakota?
Thanks!

Message: 5W-30 is the preferred weight oil for the 4.7L.
The first number indicates the viscosity of the oil at a cold temperature ("W" meaning winter), while the second number indicates the viscosity at operating temperature. (5 weight is "thinner" than 10.)
Manufacturers went to a lower first number over the years so that the oil flows to all the bearings quickly when cold, supposedly so the engine would not wear out as quickly.

Message: I just dropped in some 10w30 Amsoil. I figured that would be better here. It hardly ever gets below freezing, but it's OVER 110 in the daytime now :(
