Subject: Anyone ever tow a bobcat with their Dak? IP: Logged
Message: I have got some lawn work to do at my house that requires some excavating. I will be renting a bobcat and I was just wondering if my truck has the power to tow it. Not too sure on the weight of bobcat and trailer yet but it is a smaller bobcat and a smaller trailer than some of the contractors have. I've got a 98 CC 5.2L Dak with a class 3 hitch. I only have to go about 15 miles to the rental store and I'd rather not have to rent a truck if the Dodge can do the job.
Thanks - - - - Jim

Message: I doubt you will have any problems. I have towed a 6x10 utility trailer loaded with 2 700lb motorcycles, never had a problem. Did the same thing with a car or two on a dolly, and a couple 20' long enclosed box trailers loaded to the gills with crap. This was a 92 318 BTW.

Message: The issue really isn't your motor ...when towing something heavy it is the class of hitch and springs in back.... ie 1500 and 2500 pickups of any make...has alot to do with the rear end....
too heavy a load then you won't be able to steer safetly...

Message: You'd be surprised how heavy Bobcat skid-steer loaders are for their size. (And the Brand X ones too, for that matter.)
Here's a nice little reference chart on Bobcat SSL's and you can easily get to the rest of Bobcat.com from there if you wish. :)
I figure that anything heavier than the S130 (or the old 763G for that matter) will possibly be too much for the pickup's GCWR.

Message: yes you can tow it. for 15 miles id tow just about anything. just keep it under 100, and give some time to stop. nothing to worry about bud, ive pulled way way more than my dakota was rated for and had no problems. and, my back brakes didnt even work and, my nose pointed to the sky. like i said, you will do fine.

Message: I've towed a 6000#, 26' trailer. 4 sleds on steel trailer. The thing I learned is the stock tires with a P rating have soft sidewalls and the trailer would sway at higher speeds (115kph). I have switched to BF AT tires that are LT syle and at a higher pressure which helps out a lot. I found running the tires at full pressure kept the trailer tracking better as the truck was more solid. Just go slower and watch when you go down any hills, that when it really pushes around my truck. Had a "puckerin" moment going down an icy hill coming back from Revelstoke :)

Message: That pushing feeling is more due to how you load the trailer, than just the weight. You need tongue weight - many inexperienced towers load the trailer fairly neutrally, thinking its better not to have the extra weight on the rear of the truck. Not so - that's when you get the sway and pushing.

Message: Ya, it was likely light on the hitch too, plus when I got a wheel alighment on the trailer, things we're quite a bit out of wack. I think the recommended minumum hitch weight is 15% of trailer wieght,,, There's no way I had 900# on the hitch,, my head lights wouldn't adjust that much :)
I think I likely had about 350-400 on the hitch. Need an equalizer hitch if I do it much more. But after the better tires and wheel alignment it seemed to stay straight for a 5 hours trip.
I wonder if that little diesel in the Jeeps will be a good Dakota engine some day,,,

Message: i towed a 5500 lbs case skid steer with a 2000# trialer with no problem, but that was with a 2001 Ram 1500
the tow rating on that is like 7200# or something like that, the only thing you have to worry about is stopping
