Message: What year and model do you have? There's suppose to be a recall for the ball joints on certain years and models. Check here: http://www.automotive.com/used-cars/recalls/11/dodge/dakota/

Message: I believe in 99 both top and bottom were bolt ins. So basically remove wheel, remove brake caliper and hang to one side(don't remove line), pop tierod from spinde, remove axle shaft nut(if 4x4, pop both ball joints and manuever spindle out( support CV shaft and don't overextend) unbolt BJ's and replace.

Message: Opps Sorry, Luc is correct, if they are still original they will be riveted it, just cut the rivets to remove, aftermarkets then come with bolts.

Message: On my 99 4X4, the tops were riveted in and the bottoms were pressed in. I ground the heads off the rivets and the tops came off, for the bottoms, I took the control arms to a machince shop and they pressed the old ones out and the new ones in. I figured this was easier than renting the press and worrying about lining up the hole in the balljoint with the zerk fitting on the control arm. If you're going to remove the lower control arm on a 4X4, make sure you mark the position of the torsion bars in relation to the control arm and the frame mount, as well as the amount of threads the adjustment bolt is threaded into the frame, this will allow for the proper loading of the suspension when you put it back together.

Message: If the bottoms are "press-ins" buy or rent a ball joint press. It's way easier to leave the lower control arm on the vehicle . . . It's also way easier to than beating on them with a hammer.
Larry
PS: If someone owns multiple Daks (like my family does), just buy the press . . . you'll be using it often enough . . .
