Subject: Erratic Idle IP: Logged
Message: Recently, my truck has started doing something strange. First start in the morning, idle will waver between 600 and 1200'ish. The tach needle jumps up and down as you hear the rpm's change. It's only done it 3 times over the last month, only first start in the AM, and only for 2-3 minutes. If I put it in gear, it drives fine. This time of year it often sites 2-3 days without being run.
'01 QC, 5.9, 4x4; purchased 12/00. Hypertech at mid grade level, 180* thermostat, CAI. 70K miles, never had to fix anything. Just do routine maint according to the owners manual. Never replaced the battery. Cleaned throttle body last year.
Any ideas?

Message: Well, that was my first thought. But it's such a rare occurance that I don't think it will show anything now. I was hoping somebody would say something like, "My truck started doing that, then it got real bad and I replaced the frammus valve sensor and it resolved". or something like that.
It's still got the original factory battery, so I might end up replacing that this fall anyway.

Message: Judging from all the other threads dealing with this issue, the most likely culprit is your TPS. Mine has been pulling similar shananigans, and it dissappeared temporarily when I removed it and just put it back in. It's starting to act up again, so I may end up buying a new one in the near future. It's also a good idea to clean your throttle body and idle air control while you're at it.

Message: My Dak has had an Erratic Idle since I bought it new. After it is warmed up if I am at a stop light, the idle will sometimes drop as low as 300rpm then bounce back up to 6-800. A couple times over the yrs it has actually died going from reverse to drive. After reading probably 1000 threads on this subject, I kinda just think it is a dodge thing. I read on some post that the idle is suppose to drop to the "lower" rpms at idle to save on gas. Doesn't completely make sense since it bounces back up right away, but that is one theory. And their are 1000's of us with the same problem. If you actually permanently fix this problem without losing performace, let us know how PLEASE.

Message: I really have no clue what the problem is. I just know it seems to be pretty common. Esp. with the 4.7 I do know that if my engine is under load (say the AC is on) there is never a problem. It always Idles around 600flat.

Message: In my situation, I just put on a 68mm Fast Man TB and cleaned the IAC. Still same prob. My truck has done it since new. So, I am doubtful it is the TPS but maybe I am wrong; I'll check it out probably next Friday. Does anyone know how much a TPS is around?

Message: Your statement "so, I am doubtful it is the TPS" is not a logical conclusion from the previous statements - you've been using the same TPS all along, right ? You also haven't eliminated the possibility that it could be a bad IAC...

Message: But, it has happened since I bought the truck with 12 miles on it. So, if either the TPS or IAC were the problem, with it being into the dealer 5 times the first year for this problem (before I gave up on them fixing it), wouldn't they have found 1 of the 2 to be the problem? Maybe not? Now it has 60,000+ miles on it and no better or worse than the day I bought it. Runs perfect off idle and at idle with a load on it. Wouldn't the TPS effect other areas besides Idle as well? I am just getting into working on cars, so I will admit my personal knowledge is very limited. But, growing by the day.

Message: I don't give them credit; they couldn't fix it. I brought it in five times for this problem before I gave up on believing they could fix it. The truck had less than 100 miles on it the fist time that I brought it in.
I just seem to be reading a lot of threads on this very subject. You would think they would have a definite recall on something or a public explanation that the dealers can tell us to why it is doing it. It does seem like most of you guys know a lot more than them. I have got a lot of GREAT help here.

Message: Okay, I just purchased a new TPS from NAPA, took about 3 minutes to replace with a T-25 Torx. I now have a rock steady idle and no more erratic shifting or sporadic converter lockup. I hope it stays that way this time.

Message: I own a 2001 Dakota QC 4x4 4.7 liter V8. My truck has 97,000 miles on it. It runs like a champ no hesitation at all. But recently my truck likes to idle at 1100 Rpms solid when it is in park. It does not do this all of the time. When it does do this a i just simply do, is rev up the gas once or twice and it will drop down to normal idling speeds (6oo rpms)
i have know ides of what this could be, so can you guys please help?
