Message: Is it a Auto or a 5-speeed ? Have someone watch your reverse lights... see if they are flickering ... it could be a switch shorting out ...

Message: he said it's an auto...
My 00 4.7L auto makes a low humming/buzzing sound when put into reverse.. it always has, and I'm not worried about it. It dosen't do it when you drive in reverse, just when you select reverse. and it's quiet (you can only hear it with the windows down and the radio off)
Is your sound a series of clicks, or is it just one click?

Message: The sound that you are hearing is the clutch
solenoids that engage cluthes in the computer controlled trans. This is why you must use Mopar trans oil. stand on a street corner at a stop sign and you can tell when a Chrysler product is stopping. you will hear the click or clicks

Message: thanks for the replies. and you are right, I can only hear it when the stereo is off and the windows are down and it is just one "snapping" or "click" sound, not continuous. I haven't had the truck very long so I dont know what kind of trans oil is in it. Perhaps I should have it changed.
