Subject: what if i... IP: Logged
Message: fab'd a tensioner pulley that was double wide and then i ran a belt to turn a small fan beside the radiator to pull more air in? would it put too much drag on my serp. belt and throw my timing off? just a crazy cheap idea.

Message: I would first suggest that you start using a more descriptive subject line, most people won't read a post with a subject like this.. I know I rarely do.
Next, why not just buy an electric fan instead of hooking up something that goofy?

Message: The belt only provides engine power to turn accessories driven off your engine, like power steering, AC and necessary items like your water pump, generator and clutch fan(which isn't always necessary). The timing is driven off 3 timing chains which aren't visible unless you disassemble some things.
It's good that you are curious and seem to have basic mechanical apptitude but, you still have a lot to learn so make sure you understand things well enough so when you experiment under the hood, you won't damage anything.
While I complement you on your ingenuity, I must agree with rjwerning that you're taking the more difficult route of designing an overly complicated solution to a goal. Keep it simple!

Message: why the hell would you want to do something like that. use an electronic fan. doing what you say would be a waste of time and hog power.

Message: jay and rob are both correct on their comments...to put in a simpler form ill just mention this to you ..your fan is operated by a pulley that comes of our engine..this pulley creates a drag for your engine..Yet if you remove this pulley with the fan as well and install an electric fan you will gain at least 10 hp. thats a lot for a fan , now think what will happend if you go and add a second fan to it, on the original set up? it will only make a bigger drag , not much but yes..a drag. a fan is meant to keep the cool inside your hood...just do an electric fan and an engine cooler and you're ok

Message: kik3 do what????10 xtra horses you say. how stupid are u. the fan pulley creates no more drag when you consider the altenator and power steering and a/c. this is where the so called drag appears. the fan is meant to keep the radiator cool, thats it, not to "keep the cool inside your hood". if so we would have electric fans mounted underneath the hood, on the firewall and under the oil pan. dont give misguided info. yea, remove the pully, the fan, might as well pull your water pump out also, right kik3? stupid

Message: wow, baglady, you have no idea what you are talking about. The fan pulley turns the fan, which induces drag, and quite a bit of drag might I add. And when kik3 said "keep the cool inside your hood" he meant keeping your engine cool by way of the radiator. I suggest you do your homework baglady before you go and make an idiot out of yourself again

Message: i agree. i pulled the fan off my 93 318 4x4 to see how well it worked. i had a noticable difference. and i am a firm believer that i would gain a mile or 2 per gallon. i also had an electric fan on one of my cars. and noticed a difference too. the strain put on the alternator isnt that much.

Message: what are you twelve. I, like most people here, am trying to actually get things figured out, not blindly commenting on things we obviously know nothing about. Go back to watching cartoons. Last time I heard masterbater(its one word by the way) was back in junior high, grow up
