Message: Hey I am thinking of buying a 98-99 Dakota r/t and plan on swapping out complete exaust soon after. I was asking current r/t owners ..is the truck fast? around 300 hp..I was thinking of making the truck half hot rod/ half towing use truck it will be an everyday driver. But is the truck fast to begin with? what are some stock estimate quarter mile times? or is making the truck fast not even worth it? please reply with all your dakota r/t times and facts.

Message: Stock HP is rated at 250. Quarter miles can vary between 15.0-15.5 (club cabs) and 14.8-15.3 (regular cabs). I wouldn't call 15's fast, but with some engine work they can be very fast. If you plan on towing, don't get an R/T, they're rated to tow 2000lbs... Also, if gas mileage is a concern, be aware that 11-12 around town seems to be the average, and about 18 at best on a flat highway. If you do decide to get one, I'm sure you will be happy, I couldn't imagine driving any other truck.

Message: yeah towing can be a pain, but it is strong enough to tow, just the suspension isn't designed for towing, the rear sway bar can get damaged... if you're going to use it for towing, upgrade brakes, and add some tow bags, the kind that sit on the rear axle and inflate to raise the body when towing (sorry, drunk right now, caqnt think of proper name!) I've towed over 4000 pounds, a trailer with a full sized car with an extra tranny and a 429 big block ford on the trailer too, down I-75 from Michigan to Georgia, without issues.
basically, they didn't design the R/T for towing, and it has weak points that need to be addressed if towing heavy loads. it is pretty quick for a 2 ton truck, but it can get faster with good tuning.

Message: If you are looking for the performance of a v8 but still want to tow. i would look into the 4.7 not only is it the new motor of dodge, but also you can squeeze abit more gass mileage out of it. I got an 01 rc sport 4.7 5spd, and ran a 15 flat with just a bad exhaust system. when i redid the exhaust, and some other bolt ons, im running in the mid to low 14's soon to drop into the 13's

Message: r/t all the way. if i were in the market i may consider a 4.7, but i like the looks of the r/t way better. so its a trade off really.. ya want something unique, or something you find on every street corner?
the aftermarket for the 4.7 is no where near the 5.9 - so theres your choice maker right there i assume.
ratings schmatings... put some helper bags up under there and call it a day.
go r/t and dont look back

Message: Get a 92-96 5.2 dakota. Mine ran a 14.9 is stock form with the thin 235 tires. Now it runs low to mid 14's with exhaust, intake, rims/tires, and throttle body. I can easily tow 4000 pounds, have not really pushed it too far.

Message: My 2000R/T regular cab has knocked down a best of 22mpg(babied) on the way home from Norwalk Dragway in Ohio>(100 mile + drive)There it ran a best of 15.09. My best with this tuck was 15.001 two weeks after I bought it in 2000. It has been siting Idle for the last few years,I just took it ot and blew the dust ofher the other day. They are great little trucks, but remember they are little trucks, so if you want something for hauling I suggst a /4 ton High Output deisel ram.
