I am sure this has been asked and answered many times but I missed it. I know zip about trucks, my husband handled that when he was alive.
I have a 97 V8.I don't drive it much.
I need to pick up a crate the weight about 1200 and drive it 50 miles. Can it handle that?
I don't want to risk damaging it.

You should be fine. It may ride a bit low but it will be all right. Just make sure to give yourself plenty of room to brake. It may slow down fine in the beginning but once the brakes start getting hot your stopping power will go down dramatically.

try to get it as centered over the rear axle as possible, the further rearward it is, the more it will act like a seesaw on the front, which handles most of your braking, and keeping it nearer the center of gravity will make it a bit easier to turn, and not sway as much over bumps and turns too.
I;ve handled over 2000 ( one ton) of weight in the bed of my dakota, you should be fine... just take it slow, and as the previous post, just give ample room to brake... and stay out of overdrive too, you don't want to overheat the transmission... Oh, and make sure your fluids are at the right level first too, oil, tranny, cooolant, and powersteering.
