Message: The other day the rear end went out of my 1991 4x4 Dodge Dakota. I took it to a local shop. They replaced it and the cost was about $1000.00,
the reason being that it has a special gearing ratio. There was only two rearends in a five states that matched mine. Can anyone give me some feedback on this? What is so special about it and is there a way I could have saved some money? Thank you.

Message: Dakota rearends generaly bring a premium here too. As far as the special ratio goes the only thing I can think of is it had the optional 3.92 gears and with a 4wd you have to match the front and back diff's or change them both. I bet it would cost nearly $1000 here in mid Illinois too.
