I have a 2000 Dakota Quad 4.7L with 130K miles. The check engine light just started to come on. I ran an OBDII scan and it showed #7 fuel injection failure. I have reset the computer on several intervals and when the check engine light comes back on it shows multiple fuel injection failures (usually 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8 but never 1, 5, or 6).

My question: Do you think that the injectors are bad or is there a problem with the ECM or a sensor.

I plan on swapping the #1 injector with another that has failed and see if I discontinue the error code for the swapped injector. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

ever flushed the system? may just be clogged or stuck injectors. flush it and try again... you got a pretty good idea with swapping, just be careful of the rubber o rings.. lube it with vaseline prior to reinstalling.. its petroleum based so won't disturb fuel, and makes reinstall much easier and you wont damage the rings.

Yes, I had Dodge clean it out about 9 months ago.

I will flush the system myself and inspect a few of the injectors. I have been out on travel and won't be able to get to it until the weekend.

I will post what I find just in case it helps someone on the forums.

No mods. Pure stock.
Now the RPM is fluctuating as I drive down the highway. I'm thinking it's a sensor as I cannot see 5 injectors failing simultaneously.

I had a couple of injectors malfunction at the same time and it caused my engine to surge on the highway and when I pulled over it was idling at over 2,000 rpm. What codes are you getting? If you do need injectors, I bought some '04-'05 injectors on eBay from someone that had gone to Accel HP injectors and was selling their used (3,000 miles) stock injectors for about $80.

The codes are 0204 0203 0202 0207 and 0208. Never 0201 or 0205 or 0206.

And they are intermittent. Sometimes I can go a couple of days before it trips the computer.

If the injectors are the same as in the 2000 4.7L, then I am interested.

They are the same manufacturer but, different PN. Supposely the '99-'00 injectors were rated at 22.5lbs/hr but, actually flowed more like 19lbs/hr. So, they went to a different injector for '01-'03 PN 53032145AA that had 2 bigger holes than the '99-'00 injector. For '04-'05 they changed the injector again PN 53032704AB to 4 holes that are bigger than the 2 holes on the '99-'00 but, not as big as the 2 holes in the '01-'03 injector. I've read in different places online (no official DMC statements) that the '01-'03 injectors flowed closer to 23lbs/hr and as much as 25lbs/hr like the HO injectors. I don't know about the '04-'05 injectors but, I'm running them and they didn't hurt my mileage or driveability. If anything, it runs better than before. Plus they cost $75 + $10 shipping on eBay as opposed to $456.80 new from the dealer.

The only set I have are the ones on my engine. You probably misunderstood me, I'm not selling the injectors, I'm just giving you the information you need in case you find out that your injectors are bad and you need to replace them. Knowledge is valueable, especially if you don't want to drop $450+ on a new set of injectors. There's a lot of people that replace perfectly good stock injectors for the HP injectors and the stock ones just sit around. I was lucky to find someone selling theirs on eBay.

This weekend i've been running around and no check engine light. I'm sure that it will come back. It is just extremely intermittant.

I know it's been over 3 yrs since your post on the multiple fuel injector codes, but I am having the very same problem on my 2000 4.7 at 112000 miles. Did your problem ever get resolved and if so, how?

I had this same problem with a 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 4.7 at 121000 miles. What fixed it was replaceing the Gas Cap. I found that the Check Engine light was coming on and reporting multiple injector failures when it got down to 1/2 tank. If I filled it the check engine light would go off until it got back down to 1/2 tank. I replaced the gas cap and it has not come back on.

2000 Dakota Quad - 4.7L - 210,000 miles. I have recently cleaned the injectors, checked the resistance of each injector, etc. I still have the same problem, but mine is very intermittent (couple of weeks before running rough). I am beginning to think that the fuel filter is clogged, or that I have a fuel pump issue. I would like to check the fuel pressure (should be 49 psi), but I don't have a gauge.

Funny thing, it's hard to just buy a fuel filter and you have to drop the gas tank to get to it. If I go to that much trouble, I will replace the entire fuel pump unit (comes with a filter). That's the next area that I am looking at. The gas cap idea may also make sense.

My issue turned out to be caused by a bad TPS (throttle position sensor), a $20 item I easily replaced.
My idle speed was jumping all around but I couldnt see how that would affect the fuel injectors and thought that was just another problem unrelated to the fuel injector codes. Turns out, the computer saw the erratic, quickly changing TPS signals was trying, in vain, to quickly change the fuel flow to the injectors. I guess it exceeded some limit, and the result was the code was triggered which essentially said, "I cant keep up with this idiot's throttle demands".

So if you also have erratic idle speed, change the TPS. I put a meter on it before I changed it and the voltage readings confirmed wild voltage swings that were all over the scale.

My son is now driving it to school. Some days it runs like champ, others days, you can feel it miss during idle. Truly baffled.

TC, after 3 1/2 yrs living with the problem, I'm sure you've been given a lot of advice and probably changed some parts, but just based on my experience with the TPS I agree with you that the cause is most likely a bad sensor OR bad sensor connector. If it starts acting up when you have the time to troubleshoot it, I'd start pulling plugs to some of the sensors like the MAP sensor... maybe you can measure whether the output voltage is steady or intermittent?

I kinda doubt it's the fuel filter but nothing surprises me on this truck anymore after I spent $1000 and took it to 3 shops only to find out that an oil leak coming from my power steering switch traveled thru the wiring and kept fouling out my O2 sensor !!

Again, if you havent done so already, you could take the shotgun approach and change all the likely sensors and wiggle the connector on each to see if it's just a bad electrical connection.

It would be nice if we had a list of all the things that can turn on the check engine lite and trigger the fuel injector codes.

Yes, I looked back on my original post and have put 80,000 miles on it since then. The engine and transmission seems pretty strong. I would like to get another 25,000 out of it.

MikeM: I don't like randomly replacing parts, so i've taken most of the connections off and inspected and silicone greased them. I haven't checked the resistance/voltage on all of the sensors. Wiring could be suspect, but with all the harnesses, eliminating that would be a night mare. The last code I received was a misfire on cylinder 1, which tells me it's something to do with spark. I'm ignoring that one right now as I have changed all of the plugs and inspected the coils. Trying to go by process of elimination.

Daddio: I have used cleaners and taken the fuel rail off and thoroughly solvent cleaned. I really need to check the fuel pressure. That's my next step. My boy has told me that the last three weeks, it has run flawless. His gas guage has been flakely and it hasn't acted up. I am seeing if there is a correlation to flakey gas gauge and rough running. If so, then i'm back to fuel pump assembly.

that could indicate a possible loose ground/ connection.

Daddio: You're right, it could be, but I think that it's at the fuel pump assembly. No way to tell unless I drop the tank. I don't have any other electrical problems (unless you include crappy doorlocks, which is another subject).
