How are you timing an engine that has no distributor, cap, etc?

You sure you have a 4.7?

putting the timeing chains on correctlie is the problem i am haveing. warped the heads had to have them decked. this required the removale of the cams and chains. but now my father thinks he has bent the valves when turning the cams.

Sorry, VALVE timing, now I see. I've done an HO cams swap on my engine, just from memory, the little flat spots on the cam pulley should be level at TDC. If you really need somethig concrete, I have a copy of the DC manual on a CD.]
E-mail me and I'll attach the section from the book. As Graphite says, it may be posted.

If they were just turned by hand, it's hard to bend the valves unless you get sort of brutal with some leverage on the pulley bolt.

It's complicated but, there's 4 sprockets, 3 chains, 4 timing marks and 9 plated chain links that need to be positioned.
First, the engine must be at TDC on the timing mark.
Both cams must have the V8 mark at 12 0'clock.
The crank sprocket mark (dot) must be at 6 o'clock.
The idler sprocket (big one) mark (dot) must be at 12 o'clock.
The plated link on the right cam must be lined up with the R dot.
The plated link on the left cam must be lined up with the L dot.
The idler sprocket mark must line up between the 2 plated links on the crank chain.
The crank sprocket mark must line up with the plated link on it's chain.
Plus, there are site slots on the idler sprocket:
The right cam chain 2 plated links must be visible in the 4 o'clock position as you look at the front of the idler sprocket.
The left cam chain 2 plated links must be visible at the 8 o'clock position on the idler sprocket.
Additionally, the book has warnings about tightening the bolts to spec or else.
Chain tensioner bolts: 150 in/lbs.
Chain guide bolts: 250 in/lbs.
Also, Silver bolts retain the guides to the cylinder heads and the black bolts retain the guides to the engine block.

One more thing, To help you with the tensioners, you have to release the pawls so you can push the tensioner pistons back in. There's a hole to insert a lock pin in the tensioner to keep tension off the tensioner arm so they'll stay out of the way during chain installation.

If you're doing HO cams for instance, you really don't need any specialty tools though.
