Message: Shift sequence goes....1st gear, 2nd gear, Drive or direct, then the overdrive kicks in wich acts like a 4th gear, finally the torque converter locks up. Is this correct? It's a 72 with a 318 so I'm guessing transmission is A518 also called 46RH transmission. First, second, third or 1:1 ratio, then overdrive, finally lockup torque converter. Is that the way it works? Thanks, just curious.

Message: Since you said its a 72, are you sure its a lock up converter?

Message: A 72 will not have an overdrive trans. Nor will it have lockup so 1-2-3 is all you get. With a 318 the trans. is probably the 904. Lockups were started using in 77 if I remember right.

Message: Yup, more common 904 will have a pan that's almost square. Heavier duty 727 if bulge at right front of pan; no lockup or overdrive either way.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way
