Subject: clunk when starting IP: Logged
Message: I have a new problem from my Dakota. I've noticed lately that the instant the engine fires when starting, there is a small clunk. I'm thinking maybe a busted motor mount, but havn't checked yet. Has anyone else had this sort of problem before? Thanks in advance for any input. This site has helped me with numerous problems (thanks to Dodge).

Message: I have a 2002 quad cab with a 4.7. It also does this but only when it is cold outside, like around 35 deg.It has been doing this last year and just started this year.Sounds like a belt slipping or altenator or power steering pump making a wierd noise, only does it at cold start up for less than a second at fire up.Any suggestions?

Message: yea, I've noticed that mine has gotten worse as the weather is getting colder. It is really noticable first thing in the morning, but is almost undetectable if I stop for gas and restart the engine on the way to work. It is not the mounts. I've also noticed a sort of whistling noise the first ten to fifteen minutes of driving. Kind of like the air going through the intake system, or a loud K,N cone filter, but mine is still stock? Guess I'll learn to live with it like all the other weird problems.

Message: red01QC,
I'm not sure but it may be the starter gear disengaging from the flywheel??
