Subject: 3.7sport VS 4.8 1500 IP: Logged
Message: Tonight i was riding around with my friend
mike 'Mikes99dakota" and was provolked by a
2002 RC 4.8L with the following mods......CAI,
Shift Kit, Edelbrock shortie headers with true
dual exhaust run with the H-Pipe and dumped
from 2 flowmaster 1 chamber mufflers. (we
stoped and talked to the guy after the run ). Off
the line i feathered the clutch at about 3000 to
3500 RPM off the line i pulled 1/4 truck length
off the line, when i "speed" shifted to 2nd i pull
another 1/4 on him. then he hit 2nd gear and
pulled even with me, when i shifted to 3rd he
pulled really hard, about a truck on me.......my
low 3rd gear really does suck, atleast until
about 60 to 65 mph.
I showed him my "small block", and told him
the CUBeS, he just kept saying 226!! 226!!
226!! i did like his face when i told him that it
was stock :P mopar really FREAKING
ruls.........and Mike told him about his 318 kota,
he really didnt seem that inpressed with it until
they raced....I rode with Mike this time and the
guy seemed pretty sure that his kota will lose
too! Well they had one race and it was off the
line. They both spun but mike spun a lot more
so the guy pul about a fender length at first
until Mike gripped then pulles ahead in first
gear. Then Mike hit second and so did he and
they were even until about mid - second gear
and Mikes truck started pulling. By the time
Mike hit third the 4.8L 1500 was about 3/4
truck behind and not gaining!
This guy seemed kinda mad that his modded
4.8L lost to two stock kotas in some way!!
I am not impressed with 4.8L at all even if he
did pull me up top. O well.....sad.....I just need
to run a stock one now!!

not a baby...hehe!
When Jeremy refers to a "small block" he
means his V6 which is really a small block.
I was amazed on how well Jeremy did against
that truck...Jeremys truck is no joke even if it is
a V6!!

The 4.8L 285 h.p. has all those mods listed above with 3.42s w/posi.
Yes it is possible! I was there and If I had a video clip....there would be a lot of people wondering how come Jeremys truck is so damn quick! If you did read at the end....the 4.8L pulled on him decently when he hit third gear and was about a truck length in front!!! That means Jeremy would have LOST in the qaurter mile!
He was merely stating that he gave the 4.8L a hell of a hard time!!

Message: That IS impressive.
I drove a RC 1500 4.8 for work for about a year. Probably less actually.
It has NO bottom end like the 4.7
As it hits 4K RPM's it FEELS like you lit a firecracker under it's a$$ and starts to pull hard. Kind of like the Honda's feel like. (no bottom end then it pulls at higher R's).
The feel of that power COULD be exadgerated because it has so little until 3k or so.
I thought the truck ran pretty good. But one day I got a job North of Phoenix and on the light grades it struggled in OD and had to downshift into 2nd to pick up speed at one point. So in otherwords, it lacks in torque where our modular (4.7) has it from idle to redline.
As far as I know, the 3.7 is same design as the modular 4.7? coil over Spark plugs on top, OHC, etc?

Message: allpar.com 3.7L here's a bit of info on the 3.7L. it seems to share the 4.7's oil filler tube as well. I wonder if the 3.7 guys have sludge/foam in their filler tube when it gets cold out.... I have also heard that you can swap a 4.7L TB on to the 3.7! You gotta love dodge for that...
Oh, and what auto do they put behind the 3.7?

Message: Well....thats wierd b/c the 4.8 I raced had plenty bottom end...I would ony pull on him off the line and in the high rpms! Maybe his mods were sufficient enough to put that 4.8 to be a hell of a screamer.
I thought that I raced a stock 5.3 auto and I got beat barely. He has the basic same mods: Edelbrock Long tube headers and their dumped, hypertech programmer, shift kit and CAI. With that from off the line to 70 he was about a halfo a truck in front and slowly pulling!
O well I do pretty good for a basically stock truck. Cant wait to see the look on his face when I beat him. MOPAR PCM....where are you!!!! I cant wait no longer!

4.7 is the replacement for the 5.2
The terms "small block" and "big block" refer to v8 motors.
Nice to hear the 3.7 can hold its own though.

Message: Well it could replace the 5.2L because the engine its far superior for being a V6. But technically it replaces the 3.9 and the 4.7 replaces the 5.2 and the HEMI repalces the 5.9! But still its impressive and can hold its own well!

Message: I don't doubt for a minute that its reasonably quick like that; but its not going to have as much torque as a v8 for pulling a load. If you honestly believe its going to work as hard as an 8 you should compare the torque graphs sided by side for the 2 motors. Peak hp and torque #s don't mean as much as the area under the curve. Glad to hear you guys are so enthused about this motor though.
