Subject: 93 Transfer Case - How much is too much?

Message:
Have a 93 Dakota with the 5.2L and I just brought it into a shop because it was making a 'clicking' noise when i was going above 10mph, which ended around 40mph in 2WD mode. Had some 4WD Low issue the prev owner said "never go to that gear, you won't get it out". So I didn't, and the car ran fine for 2-3 years.

Today the shop evidentally put it in the 4WD low and everything's hosed up...whole transfer case rocks around if you give it gas... Shop pulls the transfer case and says all the fluid leaked out of the rear seal and something happened to the fork/chain/etc.. so a whole rebuild is necessary, $1380 out the door.

I hesitate and they bring up other options, going as far down as around $700 for a replacing it with a used unit in unknown condition.

Anyone run into a transfer case rebuild? Any suggestions? I heard some folks use jeep transfer cases and modify them...I also saw some 'fork eliminator' kits for the 231d transfer case... I wouldn't mind doing the work, just am not comfortable with a shop that is quoting me $650 worse case scenario, then they pull the trans and give me a $1350 estimate...then bring it back down to $700 for an unknown condition used transfer case swap, all in a matter of a few hours..

Any suggestions are appreciated..
Pete
