Message: My 93 - 5.2 uses a quart of oil between oil changes. Would this indicate a blown gasket inside the intake manifold? And if so, when you look down past the throttle body with a flashlight, how much oil would you see?
I just serviced the throttle body, and it seemed fairly clean, looks like there could be a very, very thin coating of oil film all over bottom of the intake, but nothing alarming.

Message: You would see more oil than that if you are losing a quart between changes. Mine has that same varnish which comes from the crank case ventilation. Some oil vapor gets into the intake and leaves that varnish. I would say that you should investigate other sources for leaks, and possile check compression to see if you are leaking past the rings.

Message: Thanks 99bludak. Your description of varnish is exactly what I saw.

Message: Brad
I had the exact same symptoms on my 92 4x4, a quart of oil between oil changes, it turned out to be a blown plenum gasket, a quart of oil between changes is what my was consuming.

Message: Same here. Blown belly gasket on a 92. Replaced with an M1. Oil consumption has gotten much better. Need to rebuild the top end though. I think my valve seals are bad.
