Message: It could be spilled oil from the last oil & filter change. The filter is located near the front of the engine and it does make a mess when it's replaced. I try to soak up all of the spilled oil, but there is always some hideing along the rack or cross member than tends to drip back while driving. I like to pressure wash the under side of my truck after an oil change just for that reason.

Message: that way if there is a leak you can clean off the oil and at the same time force water into the engine where the oil is leaking out. BRILLIANT !

Message: Slopehead, Do you have something constructive to add to KJ's question? Maybe a suggestion to his oil leak question? Or do you, like some others on this board read posts just to have some place to add your dimwitted useless responses? It's amazing how much useless BS from people like yourself you have to weed through on ALL message boards just to get to the messages that are pertinent to the question being asked.
Unless you have a gaping hole some place on your engine(or you left the oil cap off), you're not going to get any water in side the engine with a pressure washer. I've been working on engines for many years and the best way to isolate a leak is to FIRST CLEAN THE ENGINE! From there you can better pin point where the leak is coming from and take appropriate actions to repair it. You'd be suprised how much oil can accumulate in the nooks and crannys of the underside of a vehicle just from oil filter spillage.

Message: I'm pretty sure it might be the pan gasket. It doesnt't leak on the ground but it makes the filter a little wet with a drop collecting near the end. I first noticed it at about 70,000 miles.

Message: I also am experiencing an oil leak. I just changed my oil yesterday and added the auto-rx. so any sludge and nastiness will be cleaned out in a few miles. But I also noticed oil dripping in the driveway. It looks dirty and I now some collected on the crossmember but I usually park in the rocks and just noticed today (since the dakota was in the driveway) that there was a great deal of soiled rocks from before.
When I was under there it looked like oil was on the front cv boots and there was excessive grime build up behind the brakes. It looked like a small leak on the front of the motor. Couldn't tell if it was the pan or even worse, something from one of the front engine shafts.
has anyone experienced this? I am tempted to pull the motor and change all the seals and gaskets but fear that that will be a spendy or time consuming project. Is it something that can be done over a weekend? Any tips, tricks, info on this would be great.
I have never been a fan of dodge (mopar in general) and broke down and got this dakota becuase it was midsized and 4x4 which met the family needs. Frame has 180k... I was told the engine was replaced about 10k miles ago with a 125k motor that was pulled out of a totaled dakota. (has new motor mount bolts so comments seemed supported) It runs great but I am afraid that this could be major problem.
Thanks guys.

Message: Have you tried opening the hood and looking around? Or try
crawling underneath the truck and look around? If you smell it
chances are it is leaking on the exhaust somewhere.

Message: I recently changed my oil pressure sensor and noticed quite a lot of oil underneath, mainly around the oil pan and rack and pinion. I haven't noticed any drips in areas where I park (as strange as that sounds).
I have checked my oil level a few times and have not noticed it changing much. I have been told that my rack and pinion is leaking and needs replace. I plan on fixing that and cleaning the under carriage soon.
Does anyone know if there are any common oil leaks with the 04 Dodge Dakota 4.7L?
