Hello all , I have a friend with a 2000 Dak 4x4 with a 3.9 and it stalls all the time when cold , it will not stay running without stepping on the throttle till its really warm . I scanned it at the shop I work at and no codes came up , Could this be a problem with the IAC ?

Remove and clean the throttle body, check TPS voltage and make sure you remove the IAC motor and clean it separately from the TB. Also, check your battery. Sometimes the battery going bad on 3.9, 5.2 & 5.9 engines causes problems like you described. Good luck!

Can you explain to me what the battery has to do with it ? I ask this because the battery is going dead occasionally and needs a boost .

how old is the battery? a weak battery can cause hard starting/inability to hold idle.... if the battery dosen't have the capicity it once had, it can't recover from the big hit the starter takes out of it.
then once the engine is rnning, the alternator is doing the lion's share of "trying" to keep your engine alive. at idle, the alternator is spinning slowly, so it can't compensate for the battery's weakness.. Weak battery = weak spark = engine running like crap/stalling..... If it's the (origonal) stock battery, your about due for a replacement anyways. autozone (as some other auto parts stores) can do a charging system check. they can also do a load test, to see if your battery is in good shape....

Also as Rob C mentioned, the IAC cleaning is something to look into. heck, just clean the whole throttle body..

Most likely with a bad battery the voltage is dropping below the level required to maintain the PCM memory especially during starting when you have a heavy load on the battery. The PCM will lose the settings it learned during calibration and the engine just doesn't run that well at the default settings. I think the 3.9, 5.2 & 5.9 PCMs are much more sensitive to this. If you've been having battery problems, replace it, it's not like you'd be wasting money on something you don't need.

Rob C is correct, when I worked at the dealer this was a common driveablity concern. When the battery gets weak and the driver goes to start it, the starter pulls all the avaliable voltage and causes the pcm to loose this memory. So what happens is the engine starts and has to relearn its idle strategy. Your best bet is to replace the battery, remove the throttle body, and Idle stepper motor and clean them. Once you reassemble, run the engine and get yourself some Mopar combustion chamber cleaner and run the can down the throat of the beast. Follow the directions on the can. Also When you have the throttle body off, check down in the intake and look for lots of oil. If there is alot of oil you may have a lower plenium gasket failure. This will cause some erratic idle and oil consumption.

that is whats happening to my 97. It will stall while idling and while going down the road. No check engine of anything. I had a guy to check my alternator and battery with a voltmeter and they were fine. any solutions?

Green Dak,
Check your splice under your battery. You may have to peel the convulet off the harness, but there is a main power splice that feeds the pcm. This splice has made me tons of money at the dealership for the exact same problem you are having.

97 Dodge Dakota stalling at stops

I have a 97 Dakota 318 V8 that stalls when I come to a stop, such as at a stoplight, pulling into a parking place. It also idles fast at start in the morning. After stall, engine will start right back up. It doesn't stall while driving down the road. No engine warning lights come on. I have to have my foot on the gas lightly at all times to keep it running. Can anyone give me some advice. Thanks.

Glory,
Go to the dealer and buy a throttle body gasket and a can of mopar combustion chamber cleaner. Then remove the throttle body, get a couple of cans of carb cleaner and a old tooth brush. remove the tps and Iac sensors and clean the hell out of the throttle body. reinstall and run the can of combustion chamber down the throat of the beast.
When all done, reset the pcm and run the hell hell out of it, do some 55 mph to 80 wide open throttles and let it coast back down to 55. this will reset your miss fire monitors and idle strategies.
\If that does not work, check for powers to the pcm for the memory, if this gets corroded it will cause memory loss of the pcm.

yeah it sounds like a TB cleaning is in order for you glory 1229. especially the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve.. You need a torx T-25 bit, to get the sensors off the throttle body. just be CAREFUL with the IAC sensor! just spray it off, and don't drop it or push/pull on it...

Just set the TPS and MAP sensors off to the side (and don't loose that little rubber elbow that connects to the MAP sensor.. (MAP= Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor and TPS= Throttle Position Sensor :) the map sensor is on the front of the TB, the TPS is on the right side and the IAC is on the rear of the TB....and I'm pretty sure that the TB hold-down bolts are 1/2" I could be wrong on that though...

First you remove the battery and the battery tray. Under the battery tray you will see your wiring harness. Peel back the convult(plastic sheilding) Carefully using a razor blade cut the tape to expose the wires. You should see a big red wire in there. Look for the splice ( if bad enough there will be alot of whitish green corrosion in there. Just cut the tape off and you may have to solder a piece of wire into the splice because alot of the wire will be corroded away.

could I not replace the whole wire? I have another question: could a bad ignition coil and wires possibly cause this problem? I unhooked the wire that goes to the coil and the top of the coil was corroded and had a little of the whitish-green build-up on it. oh yeah, my wires have been on there for around 30,000 miles.
