Message: Hi. I have a 92 dakota with a 318, It will start up fine and idle but when u give it gas it backfires. It messed up one computer already and i have another one in it, so the problem is not the computer. I was told it is probably the wiring harness of the block. so anybody have any suggestions or have run into this problem before. or if anybody knows where i can get a complete wiring harness for a 92 318 dakota plz let me know.
Thanks Trent

Message: Timing problem? I had trouble with my '92 318 years ago, seems the bushing and gear on the end of the distributor shaft were worn.My mechanic said this was common, allows the timing to drift around under different engine loads.

Message: There are a lot of other things you need to look at as well on a 92. Blown belly gasket in the intake. EGR and O2 may be bad. Clogged TB sensors - IAC especially. Injectors may be dirty, especially if you have been driving with a blown intake gasket for a while. As mentioned earlier it may be time for a new timing chain. New cap and rotor, along with new plugs and wires. Try replacing the stock coil, might be getting a little tired. These are all standard items that need to be looked at on a 92, especially if it has high mileage.
