Subject: 5-speed ina Former Auto? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1992 Dodge Dakota 4x4 with a 5.2 in it, It has the A518 (46r/h) tranny in it, and I was wondering if it would be possible to put a 5-speed of some sort in it (my auto just sh!t out).... I was wondering if it was even possible, and if so what modifications would have to be made... I know holes wuold need to be cut, and I'd have to put a clutch pedal in it, but I was thinking if anything would have to be done with the computer, or wiring harness. Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Message: This mod can be done for a price. Next year I'm planning on doing this mod with a Richmond tranny. I couldn't tell you all the details because I have a Gen III Dak. I'm pretty sure that you would have to do somethings to the computer. Your best bet would be to put it with a Dodge 5 speed to ease the swap.

Message: I have a 98 5.2 2wd that I converted to a 5 speed. Yes you will have to change the computer. the wire harness was the same. You only need the longer rod and pedals to change install the clutch pedal. The holes are there for the clutch master cylinder, its where the auto cable goes through the fire wall. The drive shaft was different and the crank position sensor had to be spaced back. You have to use a flywheel from a magnum because it has the pickups for the crank sensor. The NV3500 trans is a one piece trans/bellhousing. This is in the 2wd, the 4wd may be a different trans? The only electronics in the trans is the reverse light. The speed sensor is in the rear end. The cross brace was the same just need the bracket on the trans even the rubber mount was the same. I can give you more details if you need.

Message: I'm glad someone has already done this mod. A couple of questions: did you have a shop do this and if so, was it just a tranny shop or speed shop? Also, if you don't mind me asking what was the total cost/ cost of transmission? What was the down time and if you have a regular cab, how's the leg space with a clutch?
Thanks for the both of us,
Sean

Message: I did the swap myself. It took a day of wrenching once I had all the peices on hand. I removed the parts from a donner veh in the junk yard. The total cost with the new clutch, used trani, flywheel, drive shaft, and computer was right at $1500. I have since changed to a hurst shifter. My veh is a CC and used a two piece drive shaft. The leg room is more than enough, actualy I find myself sitting closer to the dash. The only sign of the auto is the indicator in the instrument cluster. I think I will leave it so people will believe I changed it. Oh yay I had to use a after market shift boot also.

Message: Thanks for the help. I don't mess with transmissions, so I'm going to have someone else install it but this will certainly help.
