Subject: 4.7 or 5.2 in 2000 dakota? IP: Logged
Message: Which engine came in a 2000 dakota 4x4? I'm hoping the 5.2, because one is for sale on the internet and they don't know which engine is in it. Rumor has it the 318 has way more goodies available.

Message: the 4.7 is in a 2000 dakota. Kinda scary they don't know what engine is in it. must not have ever opened the hood. There is a big 4.7 stamped inside.

Message: If you want something that you can get the best perfomance out of and are willing to do lots of work, you should be looking for 5.9s. Its easier to change the cams on a 4.7, the aluminum heads tolerate more spark advance, and you'll never have to change the belly pan gasket. I'm glad my '00 came with the 4.7. I've had 5.2s, why anyone would want one over a 4.7 is beyond me.

Message: Well, there are a lot more mods out there for 5.2s and 5.9s then the 4.7. All it really comes down to is your personal preference. *shrugs* I like my 5.2
Peace,

Message: My dad has a 03 with the 4.7 and I like it a lot. But didnt the 4.7 just come out in 2000? May have some problems if it is a first year engine. OHH! I've heard that the ball joints are horrible on GenIII dakotas, should I go ahead and change them or wait for them to mess up. What is the name of those good aftermarket ones? What happens when they go out? Haha, so many questions. Yall are my heros

Message: The answer is yes.
Early 2000s had the 5.2, mid-year the 4.7 came out, so in 2000 you could get a total of 3 V8s, just not at the same time.
Mileage and moderate performance, get a 4.7L
If you like gas stations, and want big performance, get a 5.9L.

Message: Are you sure about that? I ordered my 2000 dakota in late July and received it Sept. You can't much earlier than that. The only V8 engine option (besides the RT) was 4.7. Some of the Durangos (non 4X4 I think) got the 5.2 but the dakotas do not.

Message: Also, '00 was not the first year for the 4.7; just the first year it was in the Dak. Why fix what isn't broken ? - I'm still on my original ball joints. When they go you should notice sloppy steering and tire wear. While the non greasable design isn't the best, I think there may have been some bad quality control with the metalurgy - how else can anyone else explain why some went bad so early and mine are still good - I haven't babied them, that's for sure !

Message: I stand corrected, it was the Durangos that had 3 V8s, not dakotas.....whoops. What can I say, I wasn't in charge of dodge inventory back then.
