Subject: Building motor--Parts suggestions? IP: Logged
Message: I'm finally swapping my severely underpowered V6 for a 318. Hopefully get it done this summer. I was just trying to get an idea of the parts I want to put in it and thought ya'll would probably have the best input. I know I want to bore it over, but how big can I go? Also, what is involved in stroking this motor? I eventually want to go supercharger and/or nitrous, so is there a certain piston I should consider? So far I know I want: M1 intake, 72 mm throttle body, dual electric fan, MSD off road ignition, RT heads. I want max power out of this motor, but I don't want to spend a WHOLE LOT of money. I am hoping to do most of the work myself. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.

Message: I wanted a 360, but the 318 is so much easier. I did research on it, and I just don't want to tackle it right now. I thought I saw a post that said the 318 could be bored and stroked to a 340. Am I mistaken?
By the way, the truck is a '93 4x4. To get the 360 to work, I would have had to do alot of rewiring.

Message: The cylinder wall thickness is the same I am sure. The 318 may even be thicker with the smaller bore. The bore on the 318 is 3.91" the bore on the 340 is 4.04", stroke is the same 3.31" The safe limit for boring the 318 is .030" over IMO. If you do a 318 .030" overbore and 4.00" stroke you come up with 390 CID. But it will cost more than a 360 because I doubt there are any readily avalible pistons.
No rewiring is requred for the 360 over the 318 just a custom programed PCM.

Message: Reeaaaaalllly? I'm intrigued, tell me more. What is involved? How much? The only guy I talked to that had done the swap in a Gen II used the comp from a new RT. I didn't want to go that route because of different emissions sensors and the fact that I would have to cut and splice too much.

Message: I have an article in a Mopar Mag about stroking a 318 and boring it out to a 350. They used a 360 crank and a .030" or .040" over bore(349.18 @ .030" and 350.96 @ .040"). You can't go beyond that, they just bored it .030". The pistons were custom because you can't use the same piston pin height. They may have turned .150" off the tops of the pistons to come up with a 9:1 CR. Stay small on the cam so you don't lose the bottom end torque, say 200/210 @.050" Magnum heads are better for the street especially when mildly ported.

Message: Money is what is involved. You need a Mopar Performance 4" crank P5007256. Probably custom pistons for this stroke. Find a speed shop that can balance this assembly. If you do this get a decent set of heads to feed a 390. Like I say if you start with a 360 the work will be no more and the cost will be less. You will get a bigger engine.

Message: If you are going to run boost and nos I would leave it alone! I would put some nice sleeves in to maintain standard bore. You realy want to maintain a good borexstrokexrod length ratio! I have always had realy good luck with Lunati and Crowler ballanced lower assembls. Get the best pistons you can afford. JE pistons make a good product at a very fair price. What boost range are you talking 4-8 psi,10-14 psi or16-31 psi????? You might check with mopar and see if they stock a nitrided forged steel crank. If you have a friend that works for DC or one of it's suppliers you can get alot of parts (OEM ONLY) at dealer cost. Dealer cost is usualy half what the dealer is trying to charge you for the part! If not try to get the trade or jobber price wich is usualy between the list price and the dealers price. Hope this helps some? Good Luck!!!

Message: I think Sandman touched on this, but what ever you get have it balanced. It's going to cost $100+, but it will make the engine run smoother and more reliable. Forged pistons would be a good idea too, if going with a blower or NOs.
What's a Whole Lot of Money, $1000, $2000, $3000? Stroker is going to run a Whole Lot of Money.
