Subject: Yoke / U-Joint shattering - '91 2wd
IP: Logged

Message:
Late last week as my husband was driving down the highway at 70 miles an hour he and his buddy were suprised by a loud crack and the sound of something hitting the bottom of the truck. While the engine was still going there wasn't any additional power forward. After they got to the side of the road they went and got the part that had banged into the bottom of the floor - it was the front yoke - minus a signifigant amount. Additionally when they looked underneath they found that the U-joint that had been connected was now missing 2 of the t's and it was now more of a "l". So today (Saturday) he and I replaced the front yoke and U-joint. Then we started it up and now the driveshaft is turning nicely... To bad that the wheels don't turn. =( So now we are wondering - could the diffential seized up and shattered the yoke / U-joint? If it did - how much damage could that have done to the transmission? We haven't put that much money in it - and with 150,000 + miles on it, we don't want to put a whole lot of cash into it. We can replace the diff but if the transmission is prob. trashed - what is the point? Is there a way to see if the transmission is damaged?

Thank you all in advance!

Well, the differential is definitly shot. Nice big hole in it - not sure how we missed it yesterday. We think that the problem started with the differential and moved forward.

Just wondering if anyone is out there.

I'm calling around for a differential / axel / leaf spring set to see what prices are.

Has anyone done this replacement before and have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Heather
