Subject: Fan Clutch Gone Bad? IP: Logged
Message: 99 SLT 5.2l V8 Ex-Cab No Towing Package 180 Thermo
My concerns are.....
While traveling down the interstate my Dak's temp. is fine (around 180). When I get stopped in traffic for long periods of time my temp spikes to around 210. I havent seen it go any higher than that. When it does get that high though my stock fan & clutch will not engauge and make that heave "wooshing" sound. After I get moving again thought the temp will creap back down but it's very slow. On cold starts my fan will not make that "wooshing" sound either. I'm leaning towards replacing the fan clutch. Or perhaps an electric fan. Any thoughts?
Thanks

Message: Nope, thats a normal dak problem. Welcome to the club. Mine does the same thing, as does a lot of other people's. I installed an extra elec. fan and that seems to be helping.

Message: Eric,
Could you go into detail as to what kind, where, and how that extra fan install went?
Thanks

Message: it sounds like the fan clutch is going south to me......
it should be locked when you first start the engine (sounding like an airplane taking off) then quiet down in about 20 seconds of driving.
then if it runs warm, it will lock again and unlock when it cools off a little.
is there any fluid leakage around the clutch??
with the engine off and cool, try to spin the fan. it should have a pretty good amount of drag, if not, the clutch is likely dead..... the last thing you want to do is have your truck overheat...
thats just my .02

Message: daffydak,
Thanks for the info. I did try that one morning and it was fairly firm. Although it is hard to judge not knowing how firm it is "supposed" to be. I am thinking about heading to the salvage yard this weekend to get another. Oh, by the way, congrats on the new Dak!

Message: A used fan clutch? Are you sure about that? I mean yours is worn out, what do you think the odds of a "used" one being worn out also? A new one from autozone is only $60.00
As for the electrical fan i installed. I just bought a 10" pusher. I actually got mine off of e-bay. I installed it in the lower right hand corner of the a/c cond. Really easy install. I did have to remove the front bumper assy(8 bolts). I also had to grind some of the front bumper reinforcement in order to get the clearence that i wanted.
As for wiring, i just wired it to run when ever i have the a/c compressor running. Did this thru a relay. Really easy.
Now the one thing that i have noticed is that when i run the a/c on full blast cold it gets to cold in my truck. I have to turn it down. Which in turns runs the a/c compressor less. But we have not really gotten "hot" here yet. Only been in the mid to upper 90's this week. So i am sure that when it does get warm i will be running the a/c on full blast cold then

and thanks ZoSoAir, i really have taken a liking to my new dak :-P especially the new found passing power!!! (not to mention low end torque)

Roll down your window, wait till semi truck is coming, than stick half your body out the window.
Yes, my reply sounds as stupid as your question!
