Subject: Any 1 want a 4.7 turbo kit? IP: Logged
Message: Im looking for peliminary interest in a turbo kit for the 4.7. Im working on producing a simple kit to compete with the extreme cost of a custom designed and installed turbo systems.
My idea has similarities to Duners system which has been well proven for a few years now. This is a much more simple to produce design.
This design was meant for the average mechanic to easily install himself. Moderate power increase of 50-100HP depending on certain components used. Safe for everyday use, again depending on components and how they are used.
If there are enough people interested I am considering producing a few kits that will provide all of the hardware, piping, tubing, informative instructions, etc.
You will have the ability to provide your own major components like turbo, wastegate, BOV, ect. This will allow you to shop around for costs that suit your needs. All the desing, part locating, and leg work done for you.
I havent considered a cost for the kit but it will be in the $600 or so range. With the major components adding anywhere from $600-$1000, your looking at a total of $1200 to however much you want to spend on extras.
This particular design has allowed me to boost my Dakota for around $1200.
Send me a short email and give me some feedback. Again, if there are enough interested, I can list this kit on e-bay so you can use paypal or whatever for a protected payment method.
Thanks, Troy

Message: so what exactly is in including, if you can do a base kit, with all of the plumbing and such, no turbine wastegate bov or oil plumbing i would definitly buy it TODAY, but i do need to know some info such as mounting location of the turbine, average temp under YOUR hood, pretty much if you give me an itemized list of what your putting in the kit and i think its worth the 600 bones you can put me on the list for one asap

Message: Smae here. I can get most of the compenents easily, just need the manifold and piping setup. If you could put up an itemized list that would be great.

Message: I was first turned on to this idea at a car show in Dallas where a vender was displaying a rear turbo'ed Firebird.
My kit is mounted under the cab in place of the stock muffler. So no under hood temp increase. There is a similar system in the May issue of Sport Truck mag which was reported to be a $6000 aftermarket option on a full size Chevy buildup called the LSS.
For now, I plan on my kit providing the following:
1. Oil system components-fittings and hoses.
2. T04B flanges and manifold, tig welded and powder coated.
3. Wastegate flange and bypass tube.
4. Turbo to TB piping, powder coated, with silicone hoses, t-clamps, and hangers.
5. BOV flange
6. Three Gauge pod for A pillar.
7. Turbo support frame.
This should be available for $600-$700. Again this is preliminary so this cost is estimated but every effort will be made to keep cost down. Which is the whole reason for me doing this.
What is required by end user:
1. T04B turbo, wastegate, and BOV (I can make recommendations).
2. High pressure fuel pump and Vortech FMU.
3. Brass oil fittings for turbo to 3/8 hose barb.
4. Three inch muffler and tail pipe.
5. Gauges:fuel pressure, boost, A/F meter
6. Vacuum hose
7. Fuel line and various fittings.
8. Three inch cone type air filter.
Depending on your shopping abilities and preferences, these items can be had for as little as $1000 or so. But can easily climb to much higher.
There is a ton of room for an intercooler that can be added at anytime.
I have many used parts and have a total of about $1100 in my entire system.
I dont have any hard numbers to report from my truck but I should have a dyno and 1/4 mile times within a few weeks. Email me and I will save your address, then Ill send these numbers when I get them.

Message: I thought of custome building one like this acouple of years ago. except I wanted my turbo were the cat is. were is the air filter? Isn't there a decent turbo lag with the turbo all the way back there?

Message: also how are you modifying the fuel signal? Or we need to buy a vortech fmu later on our own?
best way for interest is to provide some pics. email or posted/link.

Message: Check the list again, you do need an FMU for fuel. Lag is not bad at all, infact the distance of intake pipe isnt much more than if you piped an itercooler all the way to the front of the grill and back. And the amount of surface area offers better heat transfer, similar to an intercooler. Not to mention that the location offers a very simple method of intercooler use.
And Im sure everyone would love to see pics, forgive me for being in the preliminary stages. I plan on setting up a site of somekind. I have a couple of the manifold configuration while off the truck. If your interested email me.

Message: Theres always a catch LOL
MOUNTED UNDER THE CAB..DOH
This setup WILL cause a significant amount more lag than a proper turbo manifold.
The 4.7 with a proper manifold and a proper size turbo will have difficulty staying OUT of boost, let alone have any lag issues.
Duner was having problems with his his truck boosting while using cruise control!!!His manifolds arent even what would be considered ideal, but they ARE functional.
I think i'll pass, but thank you for taking the time to try to get product to market for us neglected dakota guys.
For many of you this kit will be exactly what you are looking for. Happy Boosting

Message: I never intended mislead or anything. Im not going to present this to anyone as the highest quality, lowest lag, yadda yadda. Its just a simple kit, that works, easy to install and inexpensive (relativly speaking).
I may be able to make a few dollars off of these kits but my time is worth something. It surely wont allow me to retire early or anything.
Ill post numbers hopefully next week.

Message: BTW, I recently saw pics of Duners latest manifold design since his overboost trouble. It is definatly high speed.
His manifold is multi port now insead of the boxed manifold he had. He also has a large intercooler upfront now. Hes looking for 500HP. Not sure of any internal mods yet.

Message: Keep us posted on this. I want sumthin to boost my hp, but $4000 for a supercharger is a lil pricey for me right now. $1200 wouldn't be a bad price, I could live with that. What differences would I see with the turbo vs. leaving my engine stock? (that may sound stupid but I never drove a turbo before)

Message: Daksmack, did you remove the regulator at the top of the tank? Your FMU won't do anything if the tank regulator is still in place. I would think you'd want an SFMU at that point.

Message: Well as u can see, anyone with a dakota, will sure give a little bit of their time (like me) to show what u offer. I would definetely be intrested on your project, especially with the key word "inexpensive" . Sounds like u are a good man, and know the deal from scratch. My question is will it work on my '98 318/5.2 V8 dak? If so please with all means send me an e-mail with pics (if possible) i will examine your project. If it makes sense then i can be a potential buyer. Although i am intrested on a kit that will require no more purchase's on the side, meaning throw everything in the kit as needed, money shouldnt be a problem. Thank you. Enrique
