Subject: 4.7 and 5.9 (Stock) IP: Logged
Message: Everyone who has a 5.9(stock) or a 4.7 5-speed (stock) time slip handy to post, please get it scanned or whatever ya have to do, so we can finally put this debate to rest. Gettin sick of here'ing the R/T guys say. Old school will smoke you! and then you modular V8 guys talk about how the new wave is what is in. Well simple way to put this garbage to rest is to get some slips up. If ya dont have a slip to show then can it.
You can take this as a flame if you want, I personally dont care. Im trying to be nuetral here, just post the time slips so we can look at em take a majority vote on which engine seems faster, or if it comes out as a draw or whatever you guys do and get on with our lives minus the 4.7, 5.9 clash.

Message: Well actually... Im curious myself. And I keep see'ing 4.7 guys going on about how the 5 speeds can take the 5.9's, and the 5.9's going on about how they're is no way those little V8's could possibly stand up to the torque the 5.9 produces.
I kind of want to know myself so I'll admit that is the basis for this post partially, the other part is see'ing the same F'in post about it day in and day out is driving me nuts.
Also, Quad, did you have a timeslip to post?

If it was about some guy saying His R/T is better in the mud, then I wouldnt even bother, as a matter of fact I would love to here more because I would be laughing my ass off, but unfortunatly this isnt the scenario.

Message: Well, I raced mine last night on the track in Kennedale. Because of the monstrous amount of torque the R/T puts out, I was not able to get good enough traction. It was nothing but spin at first, even with a 10 second burnout. the best I could do was a 10.124 @ 67.66 on the 1/8th mile...kinda suck ass, but the stock tires aren't meant for racing.

Message: It's a great thing that everyone is so proud of their rigs. I don't own a dakota yet, but think they are the best compact truck on the market. Now lets see if we are all remembering the facts. The 5.9 and 4.7 are almost equal on horsepower but not even close on torque. We all know the 4.7 is juiced up more from the factory than the 5.9. So I am saying it would be damn close with even drivers otherwise it would only mater who was driving the truck. Old rule of thumb, there is no substitute on an even playing field for cubic inches no matter how you twist it. I would go for the 5.9 motor knowing it is just about even with the 4.7 stock and with just a little modification would eat the 4.7 for lunch.
Sorry 4.7 guys, but the truth is the truth. It is great to see so many people so proud of their trucks.

Like all dakota's vs, Lightenings, Mustangs, Camero's, Firebirds, ETC. I understand most of those cars in there newer stages, we couldnt hold up with but those are the ones that we should be saying, for example "Well my modded 4.7 kicked a modded mustangs ass last night" Or something along those lines. Not the constant 4.7, 5.9 deal.

Message: Well I know of a few guys who claim their RC R/Ts ran mid 14's pure stock, and I know of one CC R/T magazine test, done at an actual dragstip, with uncorrected times of 15.1 pure stock. So in better conditions, on a broken in motor a CC r/t should be in the high 14's, and a RC in the mid 14's. As far as the 4.7 times I've seen 14.8 for a pure stock RC seems about the best I've ever seen posted, but maybe in idea conditions with the perfect run they too may be capable of a 14.5 too. So pretty much comes down to a tie, again. The 4.7 is a lot less money though, but the mods are more expensive and fewer and father between. The R/T handles way better as well, but the 4.7 tows better. The transmission the R/T gets is stronger then any transmission the 4.7 gets so will last longer as the mods start to add up. The R/T's driveshaft also seems to be stronger as well for big mods.

All the times that I have run my truck against an R/T I have never won or lost by more than 1/2 a car length. My best pass was a 14.78 at Morrosso Speedway. All I have done to my truck is Flowmaster exhaust & 20 inch Boyd Coddington rims. I take most stock Mustangs especially out of the whole. Thats what I think is best of all beating a mustang with a truck.

Looking for differences between the too vehicles at the base is the point of interest at the moment. Last but not least... Who said their vehicles were stock?? I just said I think it would be interesting to see some stock 4.7 5-speed, 5.9 R/T time slips thats all. Your makin me feel like a broken record here.

Message: I think me & D agree when we say that it would NOT be interesting to see some STOCK 4.7 vs 5.9 time slips.
It's pretty darned obvious that the two trucks are so close in performance that this debate will rage on forever. Which then kind of makes it a non-debate.
The R/T guys get a nice suspension and some nice wheels thrown into a package price that's a little more expensive than the 4.7 sport. Meanwhile, the 4.7 Sport guys can pretty much stay dead even with the R/T's while gettign better gas mileage. I said pretty much. Some will win, some will lose. That's racing.
What we are doing here is NOT racing. It's BS'ing on the computer. I'm headed for the drag strip........

Message: they are the same. a tenth of a second in the quarter mile doesnt mean shyte in real world driving. both have good motors, both have a decent amount of horsepower, but both motors have a very high potential at making some massive horsepower. stock vs. stock...go to the dealership, and see for yourself. Mine had a muffler on it the day after I bought it. People dont buy R/T's and v8 dakotas in general to keep them stock.
good luck finding maybe one person who takes their stock truck to the track in this forum.
Most people are like me...wont take it to the track until they have enough mods under their belt that they can feel confident about beating at least one person.

Message: CW if Chrysler thought the 45rfe was stronger then the 46re, they would both have different numbers. The 46re is a 727 torqueflight used behind all the great Mopars of the past with an overdrive unit on the end. Its pretty well proven. So I would imagine the average 46re is subjected to much heavier trucks and towing duties then the average 45rfe, not to mention more torque output from the motors the 46re is attatched to. Seeing as how so many more 46res are made in the Dodge line right now added to the obove reasons it's no wonder you would see way more for repairs then the 45rfe. I seem to remember the 99 grand cherokees with the 4.7-45rfe setup were some of the worst cars ever measured in initial reliability. I wonder what a Jeep shop would have to say on the 45fre -vs- the 46re thing as they see them used on a more equal platform.

Message: Geezzz Like I said we will see about the 45rfe it may be just as much of a dud but this is the first year that they have been out in the 1/2 ton modles.
They ruined a nearly indestuctable 727. That O/D unit is weak. These are not high milage units under 40,000 on them. A big problem right now is the torque convertors are going out and overheating the trans. I work the front lines I see all that happens to these trucks and there are far more failures than there needs to be.
There are 2 of the stupid things in the shop right now. It is a lubercation problem not a torque handling ablility problem.

Message: Seems like its way too early to be judging the durability of the 45rfe. Someone involved in their development on an older thread suggested they may be stronger due to planetary gear design - no bands to wear out. And lets not forget that great 727 came in different permutations - more clutch packs were added for the higher torque applications. Add an overdrive and a lock up torque converter and your not exactly strengthening the unit. Anyone wrecked the gears in a 45rfe yet so we can compare to burnt out bands and clutch packs ?

to say the dakota is the best compact rig is just your opinion..and many others for that matter. But every rig has it's own niche....like i don't think anyone will deny that the tacoma trd is the best offroad vehicle stock vs. stock......and the r/t is prolly the fastest stock truck....the only other truck that comes close if not better is the s-runner...i'd like to see stock timeslips of the r/t, 4.7 5 speed and the s-runner so all this b/s is over about who is fastest
