 Subject: clunk - torque converter????

whenever i press on the gas or let off the gas all the way, i hear a clunk towards the back of my truck. when i got an oil change, i had them check the u-joint, because i had this go out on my last truck at around the same mileage (78,000) and they said it was fine. could this clunk be the torque converter? if so, is it normal. tia
ps. its a 94 4x4 auto v8 clubcab

I think I may know what your problem is. I had a 1992 4wd that did the same thing. The gen2 4wd and possible the gen3's have the transfer case sitting very close to the transmission crossmember on the drivers side. They actually put a 1" spacer between the transfer case and the rear transmission mount as a "Quick Fix" from the factory for this design flaw. The 2wd's do not have this spacer between the transmission crossmember and the transmission mount. It is possible that the spacer is gone. Also, the mount itself maybe deteriated or broken which would allow the transfer case to bump the frame.
The only reason I know this is because the 92 I had blew a transmission and when the dealer replaced the trans under warranty they left the spacer out. I had to solve this problem on my own. The dealer did reimburse my money for the parts they left off my truck when they installed the new transmission.
Also, I had a friend with a 94 like yours. His made the same clunk that mine did. I crawled under his truck and it had no spacer. He swore that it had the original transmission in it so there was no way the dealer or anyone else left it out accidentally. That means the factory left it out.
Yours is a 94 also. The spacer is as long as the mount is wide and has 2 holes through it where it sandwiches between the frame and the mount using the same 2 bolts that holds the rear mount on.
It maybe something else, but I have a good feeling that it is something to do with the rear trans mount.

i looked and the mount was there. any other suggestions. what would cause the diff to make this noise?

Check the clearance between the Transfer case and the crossmember on the drivers side next to the frame rail. That is where they like to bump when a mount gets soft or fails.

I'd check the differential, personally. Get a friend out and have him kneel down beside the rear of the truck. With your foot on the brake (don't squash anybody!), put it into reverse and let your friend listen for the location of the clunk. Then go into drive. Repeat until the location is determined, and there's where you look for your problem!
