Subject: 3.55 for towing??? IP: Logged
Message: my 2001 5.9 qc has 3.55 gears and the tow package.some say that thats not the best choice in gears for towing.why would they put that ratio in there with tow package if it wasnt?id like to add 31" tires.prob a body lift to accomidate them.
what if i added 31's and put 3.92's in there...or,even 4.10's,how would that effect the towing capabilities?

Message: The 5.9L makes a boatload of torque. Even with 3.55 gears, you can tow quite a bit. With 4x4, your GCWR is 9,200 pounds. With a 3.92 gear, it increases to 10,800 pounds.
The auto transmission has a 4th gear ratio of about 0.70, as I recall. The exact ratio doesn't matter now. Anyway, with a 30" tire and 3.55 gears, you'll be turning 2,000 rpm's at 71 mph.
If you increase tire size to 31, that's only a 3.3% change - not much at all. But now you'll be moving along at 73 mph at 2,000 rpm's. So you've lost a little torque.
But, if you then swap to a factory option 3.92 gear, now you're moving at 66mph at 2,000 rpm's. So you've gained back your lost torque and then some. A 4.10 gear puts you at 63mph. And a 4.56 gear puts you at 57mph.

Message: .boB is absolutely right you don't need the 3.92 gears to tow. The 3.92 gears, I believe have to be ordered seperately from any option package. You will be better off in the long run with the slightly improved MPG of the 3.55. I have to say that I wish my truck had those some times. I rarely get the 13city mpg that the window sticker says. But, the truck has every option I believe and a canopy. those things certainly don't help fuel mileage.

Message: I have a '95 4x4 5.2L with 3:55s and it pulls my old 1985, heavy-arse boat with ease. I am glad I had 3:92s on my V6 Dak though, because it was another story!

Message: My 94 5.2L 5spd has 3.23's and I have no problem pulling anything. I also get 21mpg at 70mph on the interstate. I can squeeze 23mpg on the highway doing 50-55mph. In town I average 16mpg. I pull a 24ft camper with a ATV in the bed every year 7 or 8 times a year and I have no problems mainting speed in 5th gear.
