Message: Although I'm probably pushing it a bit, my 97 5.2L tows a 26ft 6000ib+/- trailer fairly well. Haven't traveled on really long trips - 3 to 4 hours at a time.
The only mod I have, so far is an Air Raid intake - K&N took to long to develop one and the Air Raid was a $100 less. The 97 towig package came with a tranny cooler. I seem to recall the newer models don't include it anymore with their towing package- could be wrong, though
I use a distribution hithch and have a tailer brake too. Braking seems to be the biggest issue.
4.7l and 4800lbs should be fine.

Message: I am pretty sure my 2003 4.7 has the tranny cooler. It would be a pretty damn big power steering cooler if that's what is in front of the condenser!!!
The 4 wheel disk brakes stop my trailer really good for not having any trailer brakes.
I've been pulling these up the BIG mountains no problem. These 4.7's haul a$$ too. The Chevy's got nothing on the 4.7, they still eat my dust!

Message: If your going to invest for towing go to the 3.92 rear end. That raises your tow capacity by a good 1000lbs. Gears do more for towing than horsepower in this case. Headers will also get some easy low in torque with the air intake to let more air in.

Message: no...I buy used suvs and trucks for a living for
auto dealers.I have had more trouble with this engine than all others combined. It is very sensitive to dirty oil and will fail before 50k
if not meticulously maintained. In addition, 4.7s
have some timing chain issues. It is probably the
worst engine Chrysler ever made and it rivals the
old Cadillac 4.1 in terms of durability

Message: If you are going to purchase a used Durango,Dakota
or any other Chrysler product with a 4.7, check
the oil dipstick for signs of sludge,or ask if there are any service records. Drive it for at least 25 minutes and check the oil pressure guage
often. If the oil pressure is low DO NOT BUY IT,
even if under fact. warranty.Chrysler will decline
the warranty coverage if sludge is present, which it often is because of this engines poor oiling design.
Most engines will suffer excessive wear from prolonged oil change intervals...this engine fails.

Message: Oh...I almost forgot. For FKDODGE. You should know
that the three way tie for second place is all 3
Ford Triton engines. The 4.6,5.4,and 6.8 Ford
engines provide an incredible combination of bad
fuel economy, low horsepower, mediocre torque and poor reliability. If you want reliability, durability and power, you cannot buy
any Ford with a gas engine. At least Dodge gives
you an alternative with the 5.9 or the Hemi.
