Subject: Don't use high octane IP: Logged
Message: I have read a lot of post where the person says "I will try a higher octane fuel." DON'T DO IT! read your manual, it will say the octane your engine is rated at. for the 4.7 it is rated at 87, the cheapest stuff. higher octane does not = better. higher octane rating means it can be compressed more before it explodes, i.e. higher compression engines need it. If you put it in an engine that does not compress as high it will still work, but it is not what your engine is designed for and will probably cause problems.

Message: Your right BAD, high octane fuel does not burn as hot as 87 in a low compression engine and one that has had the timing retarded.

Message: Stock yes, but if you put the Mopar High Performance Brain *PCM I think it is called* It calls for a higher octane..92 i think..I put 94 in mine with the Brain and it runs MUCH better

Message: Bad Mo Fo is correct for the most part. High octane will NOT HURT to use it on low comp engines. But it does no good either!
The higher the Octane, as he said, the more it resists combustion. So if you bumped up your compression, you better use high octane and colder plugs. If you are STOCK. High octane and cold plugs does nothing for you. Also the timing advance form a PCM would require higher octane because the low grade would detonate too quick, etc.

Any way I can tell????

Message: carmen: You're running into another issue entirely: older, high mileage engines require higher octane to run efficiently due to tolerances lost by engine wear. In your case, you can experiment with mixing regular one time, and premium the next. Sometimes 3-4 gallons premium in a full tank of regular will stop the pinging. I had a '92 5.2 with 217K, last 50K on a MP computer, which required 93 octane. I believe the part number on the computer is visable, and Dodge parts can check that.

Message: i had a 83 camaro and it required premium fuel or it would no turn off when i took the key out. it would just keep chugging along and then finally stop with a very loud engine rev at the end. yeah, it was a sweet ride.

Message: That was likely from carbon build up in the heads, it heats up enough to keep firing the mix and is called dieseling. You could also have shut it off under load (in gear) and it would have stopped normally.
