Guys, I'm so sick of my '96 SLT blowing trannys that I'm thinking of selling it. Just can't see spending 2500 to 3 grand on a A518 tranny for a 7 year old truck. Any idea what a 96 SLT ext cab 5.2L with bolt ons and 158K miles is worth with a bad tranny?

thanks

robertg

How many miles did you get out of your first trans? I have 115k miles on the original. 3k is way high. Ive seen fresh high performance, heavy duty a518's for $1400.

Can't say I blame you. I did the same thing with my '89 Shelby. Fried the same one 6 times, then a replacement once. Then it was off warranty. I never even towed anything!!! It got parked in '95. Now I have a 46RE that's being reverse engineered to make it a 46RH. It's certainly a learning experience as I've not done trannys til now, but after my 15-20,000 mile A500 disaster tranny, I can't put the 46 back together without upgrading the clutches, and reworking the valvebody. Had I known then what I know now, I'd have skipped the warranty work and gone straight to a professional that had experience in building race trannys. If I had, it'd still be running. Sorry to see it's still happening, but you're in so deep, it's a shame to get taken on the sale.

No that doesnt include install. I was shopping for a high perf trans a few months ago and came across a website. That probably doesnt include shipping either.

I got 100K out of original tranny. The local shop I brought it to was a bunch of shaved ape morons in oct 2000. They left the check ball in the cooling line unchanged/unremoved. So the tranny would go about 2000 miles and burn the F*&K up with a vengence. I burned up 3 or 4 trannys under warranty. Changed radiator, cooling fan, external cooler, etc. Removed the check ball problem W/O knowing what it was. Tranny ran for 6 months, 10K miles, just out of warranty. Then the cheapo Dacco TQ went out after I towed a car. So the shaved ape shop changed the TQ under warranty and in no uncertian terms told me to get stuffed. And it still wasn't shifting right cuz the metal got in the 46RE's shift solenoids. So the dealer charges me another $550 to straighten out the valvebody about a year and a half ago. Never shifted right again, always hung in 2nd too long. Two weeks ago I tow with the truck, and guess what? The cheapo Dacco converter blows again! So I bring it to another tranny shop, and they find finely ground up metal in the pan. Dead tranny,

I called JVX in memphis. $2200, no coverter and I'd have to tow the truck 3 hours to them.

I call SMR in Ontario canada, they say 2 grand for tranny, 400 for a converter, 150 shipping, then 300 in local shop labor to put it in.

I call a local hot rod tranny shop. They tell me I've lost my mind wanting a 518, and I should install a 727 if I want it to hold up behind any power. Direct quote: "Man, I seen the V6 dakota engines toast that A518 tranny. It ain't worth a s*&t."

So I'd have to lose my OD and convert the electronics, mounts and driveshaft. Oh well, I guess its time for a new chevy.

grrrrrrr...

I guess I'm due soon for a tranny then. I'm currently over 115k miles. As for as the A518's not being able to handle a mild V6 is nonsense. They are supposedly good for 400hp. I estimate close to 280 at the moment and I tend to push the tranny hard at times. One day my luck will run out I'm sure, but it has never given me a problem. It gives a slightly slower shift into third when its really really cold out. Its unfortunate you had such problems, I do feel more that its human error than a problem with the parts. Apes dont make great mechanics, only astronauts... or was that a chimp.

I'm running 158k on my original tranny from 92. I haven't exactly babied it either.

Fastman will build sell you a 518 for $1400 that supposedly takes 700 hp. I plan to go here when I have to rebuild mine.

Maybe Chrysler Corp decided to cheapen the parts in their transmission.
