Subject: MPI? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 Dakota Ext. Cab with the 318. I want to put in a new Mopar Performance 360/380hp or 402/435hp Crate Engine and have noticed that the dealers say "No or Not Recommended for MPI installations or A/C." What does MPI stand for and just because it says not recommended for A/C, can A/C still be used? And, can the 402 fit in the engine compartment?

Message: MPI = Multi Point Injection, a form a fuel injection. What they are saying is that they recommend a carburetor instead. Those particular crate motors have high-lift cams, and are approaching race-engine characteristics, so idle quality to support an system like air conditioning would be difficult. That's not to say it couldn't be done, just tough and irritating.

Message: The intake manifold would have to be replaced with one made for MPI otherwise your injectors would have nowhere to go. I also think that the A/C compressor would need to be modified in order to make it fit on the crate engine.

Message: The 402 is the same size engine with a stroker crank.
