(I thought I posted this already but I don't see it)
I have a '99 Dakota with 5.2L V8.
Sometimes it won't start, it turns over, there is fuel pressure (I tested it), but it won't fire. If I keep turning it over and pumping the gas, eventually, it'll start trying to start, maybe backfire out the intake a time or two, and then finally start and run real rough for a second or two. Then with a few stabs of the throttle, it'll clear up and run fine and start fine for days.
I took it to the dealer they couldn't replicate it but cleaned my battery and did something else, charged me $300 and it still happens.
I'm about to sell this thing if I can't figure this out... anyone else had this problem or got tips?
THANKS!

Message: you have to have . air, fuel , and spark to run.
so i would check the spark plugs, then the wires then the distributor. if not that then check all your sensors on your throttle body. most likely its a sensor.

Message: I have a 1999 dakota 5.2L that did something similar, when it was hot it would shut down while driving or not start when stopping somewhere for a short time. It turned out the PCM had a bad circut and when it got hot it would shut down the engine. If it's intermittent it might be something like that.

Message: I dont know where you are located but several years ago my 93 5.2 would not start in the mornings when the weather got cooler in the fall.In the warmer afternoons it worked fine.
I finally found the computer bad by blasting it with a hair dryer at 5 AM.

Message: I had the exact same problem as you, but I noticed that it only happened when it was raining. Turned out to be one dead spark plug and one dry-rotted plug boot. If yours runs fine after starting, though, it might be moisture in the ignition system rather than moisture in the plug wires.

You guys may be on to something. With me, I noticed it after a rain also, and I suspected something like a crack in the spark plug wire. I took it to my Dodge dealer and they claimed to have hosed the motor down and not been able to duplicate it. But humidity can maybe soak into spots a hose can't hit, so maybe replacing my rotor cap, plugs, and wires would be a good idea.
I'll also check the computer... you know, I have a leaking A/C thingy in the dash... I wonder if freon dripped out onto the computer... or is the computer under the hood?
