Subject: Shaky Idle Issue IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone found a fix for the 5.2 and 5.9 "shaky idle" problem on 2002 Daks?
I have already gotten the "its normal" and "they all do it" prognosis from my local dealer.

Message: Mine did that also until I fixed the plenum/belly pan gasket. Did they have that problem fixed by the 2002 model year? If not check to see if that is the problem. Mine is a 1999 and does not have a rough idle after the fix.

Message: Unless you have an R/T or a Quad Cab with the 5.9 in it your 2002 doesn't have a 5.2/5.9 it is the 4.7

Message: No worries with my 5.9 quad 4x4 2002 to date w/17K. Purrs like a kitten/cat/tiger/lion...whatever. Having worked on issues like this though on past engines, the belly pan issue (if it still is one) makes sense as it would appear to be a lean condition causing the engine to have these symptoms...or ignition (but these ignitions are pretty good with minimal maintenance assuming you haven't tinkered with anything). If it's an intake leak on the top side vice the underside, you can "shade tree mechanic" it while its running. Take a spray can of WD-40 or some other petrolium-based product and lightly (with the attached straw nozzle) spray a light stream along the mating surface of the intake and head (I've used Ether and Carb Cleaner for this as well..just be careful with the Ether) If the RPM's pick up and the engine smooths out for a moment, you've found your vacuum leak and you can proceed accordingly. May not be the issue at hand, but you can at least try it and see. I'm sure other posters will provide their observations as well.

Message: Belly pan gasket is up underneath the intake manifold. You can look straight down into the TB and if you see oil, the gasket is bad. You have to remove the intake manifold to fix it. If your not sure you can take the truck to a dealer and they should be able to diagnose it. I belive there is a TSB on it but I don't know the number. But like I said I'm not sure if this was a problem on 2002 model years.

Message: Thanks, I will look into the problem as described above. I was thinking it was an ignition issue possibly the module but the dealer I took it to supposedly ran a diagnostic on the truck (Quad Cab). I have been through this dealer issue before when I had my 2000 Z28. You get the feeling they know it's a problem but they just don't want to do the work under warranty. I don't know why; they get paid labor for warranty work don't they?

Message: Your absolutely right about the dealer knowing the problem and trying to put if off until it is out of warranty, I've seen it before while working at a service station just down the street from a dealer. People would bring their vehicles in and ask us to look at it, we would find the problem and they would tell us how they had been to the dealer several times and got no answers so they drove it to our station. If the truck is under warranty I would just go to the dealer again and tell them to test and see if the plenum pan gasket is leaking. Let them know that you know about the faulty gaskets and are wondering if that is the problem.
