Subject: Any 5spd Manual Quad Owners?! IP: Logged
Message: I am starting to feel like I have a rare optioned Quad Cab. The dealer here in PA where I got my truck had 7 Quad Cabs and 3 were manual 5spds. Between the other 2 dealers here there was 2 at one and 1 at another. I always buy a 5spd regardless in my vehicles cause I just can't stand Autos after always having a 5spd.
Anyway, not many on this board or other Dakota/Dodge boards seem to have 5spd manuals? Are they just a rare find or what?
Just curious. It is hard finding someone to talk about the 5spd Quad with.

Message: Well,
I ranted and raved about feeling the same way you do.
Yes, I have an '01, 4.7, QC, 5spd, with the SLT interior, and trailer towing package, which includes the HD Service3 Group, the LSD rear end, that has the beafier 11in. drum rear brakes. Oh yea, and the tire and handling package, that comes with 16X8inch mags, and wider/lower tires.
It's got some mods, like, HO cams, HO intake, ported 68mm TB, no belt clutch fan, an ait adjuster, 180t-stat, 3923 autolite plugs, and a 'true' cold air homebrew intake with K&N filter.
The '01 4.7, came with NO engine badging, and with my 5spd, it really surprises people when I out accelerate them and blow by them. Especially looks sleeper, with the color matched, cab high, leer shell on the bed. It's got the factory two tone paint, white over silver, and the OEM silver fender flares. Infinity stereo sound CD, etc.
My truck is what I wanted, and NO-ONE had one the way I wanted it. I ordered it, delivered in aobut 5 weeks.
Now, you think YOU have a rare bird?

Loaded with all but that overhead computer thing.
There were very few to be had on lots around here, but I ended up finding the one I wanted without having to place an order.
I LOVE THIS TRUCK!

How would you rate the HO cams and intake? I was thinking of making that one of my first mods. Let me know your thoughts on yours.
Thanks!

Message: Ernie, you will like the HO stuff more if you do them in conjunction with an intake, exhaust mod (more free flowing). No use in putting in all the HO stuff if more air/exhaust isn't going to be able to get in/out.

Message: The manufacturers are killing the stick shift. It really disappoints me. I've got a 98 5.2 with a 5 speed. It is more fun to drive, I feel like I have more control. Plus, with a performance exhaust, it sounds much cooler going down the street running through the gears than an auto. I can't believe how hard it is to find a stick, especially in this truck. Isn't the Dakota supposed to be sporty? That's one of the reasons I own a Dakota.

Good thing you can still order many engine combos with a manual.
Wish it were a 6 speed!
You know, all the hot new cars, expensive ones, usually have a manual, 6speed. Course, we are talking a truck here.

Message: TexasTodd, I too am glad that many engine combos still include a manual.
Absolutely loving this truck! I definitely want to get the HO goodies in there with a better intake and exhaust as well.
I like a real solid strong tone out of the exhaust, I have been hearing a lot of Ultra Flo mufflers lately, I think I am really leaning toward one of those, I say one because I am thinking of keeping the single exhaust.

Message: Ernie,
Refering to 'the dudes' comments, I still have the stock exhaust. After people tried catbacks, redynoed, and in some cases LOST HP, I'm still holding off on that one! The first thing most people do is spend $$$$ on an exhaust system, that still uses all three cats, and the stock y pipe, they change their sound, and who hoo, they think they got more HP.
I have ported my 68mm TB, making more of a true 68mm, and have a nice, thought out, 'true cold air' (none of the air comes from under the hood), home brew of course, with a k&n filter. Funny, but, you'd be hard pressed to find a true dyno, with the air filter intake as the only mod showing any gains! They did it right on the 4.7-stock, one reason way it has a great HP/cubic inch ratio-stock!
But most people, will do the old exhaust/intake/filter, and really think they're getting somewhere, especailly after the spend $$$ for little, if any true HP gains!
Now, getting back to your question:
I did the cams about 10,000 miles before I added the intake. I spent $110 dollars for BOTH cams, and $140 for the HO intake manifold. The cams really make a noticeable difference-dyno proven, and yet they're still factroy stock stuff.
The intake: I din't feel any loss of low end, still pulls well in the low r's. And as the dyno proves, it gives you more rpm, and tq/hp, way up high in the r's. Do I go there much? NO, but when some idjut, in whatever car or truck, thinks he's going use his HP to so something stupid, they get a big suprise! I don't race my Quad cab on the 1/4 mile. I used to have a suzuki GS1100, that I got my kicks on! 10's in the 1/4, stock!
So ernie, you asked for a rating, and I gave you a ranting instead but here goes:
The cams: more time on the install, more noticable gains I'd rate it a 6 or 7, of 10.
The intake: less time, little chance of screwing anything up, unless you're over 5 grand (rpm), you probably wouldn't really notice it. I'd rate it 5, but I'm glad I did it, for the few times I run my truck that high.
I've heard this one guy post that he can even 'chirp' the tires in 2nd gear with his 5 speed, 4.7. Chirp? Chirp? Hell, when I'm really getting on it, My QC damn near gets sideways, with some wheel hop, with the 16x8 mags, and of course Post traction!

Message: TexasTodd, I've got a question for you on that intake.
Is the new HO intake Aluminum or is it plastic like my stock one?
I actually think the plastic one is BETTER for heat reasons but maybe not as far as flow goes. I can drive my truck hard, up hills in the mountains, and then pull into a gas station and hold my hand on my intake and not burn my hands to the slightest! You couldn't do that with aluminum!
So maybe I'd be as well off just doing the cam swap and leaving my stock intake?
Any special tools to change the cams? I've got a shop full of tools and power tools in my garage so I should be well set.
Also how does the HO cam swap effect me pulling my trailer up hills? I've got a 4X4 4.7 3.55 LSD QC, etc etc (and oh yeah, a nice home brew intake that takes air next to the fog light) that still passes cars in the mountains with a trailer and three quads behind me. I know it's the wrong thread, but since I found you here...

Message: TexasTodd,
Thanks for the ratings on the HO stuff. Think I will definitely get the cams and intake installed as well sometime soon when I can fit it in. I don't race my quad either except the occasional put someone in their place at a red light routine.
I am looking at the mods just to add some HP to the truck and have some fun working on it. As far as the exhaust goes, I too am waiting on that. I really only want it so I can hear the 4.7 rumble, but if I lose torque or power forget it. I may just do a K&N drop-in for the intake and forget about the actual intake kits, just add the better filter.
Anyway, thanks for the input. Look forward to talking to you guys on the boards.
If anyone ever wants to drop a line or discuss the trucks...my email is emiller426@hotmail.com

Message: I came across my 4.7/5speed/QC in a rather cool fashion last August.
1) Tuesday - I got preapproved for a loan.
2) Wednesday - I searched the online inventory of a number of Dodge dealers. I got frustrated because everything with a v8 was auto.
3) Wednesday - Called Cerritos Dodge and talked to a salesman, told him what I wanted. He looked through his resources and called me back in two hours after he located two. A short while later called again and only one was now available. I told him I would be in Friday night to pick it up.
4) Wednesday - He called me at about 10PM stating he had retrived my truck from a dealer in San Diego. See ya Friday...
5) Thursday - Friday night couldn't get here fast enough!
6) Friday - Got my loan package in my mailbox. Went and picked up my truck.
Interesting thing about the truck. The origianl dealer special ordered it, got built in April, delivered in May, and sat unsold until August waiting for me. I guess (great for me) noone in San Diego wanted to drive this truck. The dealer even had the truck marked *rare* on the invoice so the sales people wouldn't deal it away easy. It just sat until they got tired of looking at it.
The truck had every option I wanted, had I been able to order it my way (tow pkg, heavy duty, plus pkg, power everything, front bench seat, 3.92 LSD). It also came with a few other things that are cool to have. The only thing I hoped to find was the same truck in a red sport model. Oh well, not this time...
I lucked out on my purchase that *my* truck was built and waiting 3.5 months for me to pick it up.
So much for all those "sales" people that tried shoving me into an auto. After having my truck (almost) one year I couldn't imagine having one with an auto.

Yes i know all about hard to find 5spds. I did something i didnt want to do, buy from a realy small shady dealer. Lucked out and saw it by a gas station when i had to pee. Had everything i wanted exept power windows and locks. 98, 318, extended cab, 4x4, 9 1/4 rear, 5spd, np231HD transfer case, towing package, came with 31x10.5 tires stock, towing pkg, tinted windows, sun visor thingy over top of windshield.
Only thing i have added so far is a hurst shifter.
I love this truck and probably will never sell it. I thought it was funny, exept for the IFS it has the same drivetrain as a 1/2ton pickup.

Yes, the HO intake IS PLASTIC, much like the stock 4.7.
And for all the details, making your own cam chain wedge, or buying one, or not even using one, and all the perticulars, tips, tricks, etc.,
not to sound like a jerk....but if you take some time, and do a search on this site, you'll get instructions, tips and ticks, tools needed, etc.
Good luck
