Subject: HELP!! blown head gasket?? / running hot IP: Logged
Message: Hey all,
I've got the weirdest thing happening to my Dak
I have a 96 2WD with a 5.2 ltr all stock w/ 112000 miles
Only when I'm sitting in traffic the temp needle
starts climbing on me approx 20 degrees.
It over heated once in traffic.
It's fine while moving but only acts up on 80+ deg. days.
I started with replacing the Thermostat from a 180 to a 160. since then it won't over heat but still climbing aprox. 20 Degs. So I flushed out the entire system and changed all the coolant hoses.....temp still climbing, so I change the radiator,.... same thing, then the fan clutch, water pump, temp & coolant sensors.
I did a compression test and here are the results
starting from the front of engine back.
Driver side 150,135,155,100
Passenger side 150,150,135,145
B/F I tear my Dak apart I wanted to get some opinions do I have a blown head gasket??
**I'm not loosing any coolant**
other ideas/help will be a greatly appreciated
Thanks,

Message: Sounds like a blown head gasket or cracked head. Same thing happened to my buddy's 360.
Does the heater blow hot air into the cab or is it just blowing ambient temp air? Start the motor & squeeze the upper radiator hose. Is it hot? Is there fluid in it, or is it really easy to squeeze?

Message: No it blows hot when I put the heater on
and VERY cold air with the A/C on.
I forgot to add that the only time it runs hot is when the A/C is on.
otherwise it runs it's normal temp.
When It's running hot if I shut the A/C off the needle comes down within 1-3 Mins.
It's also fine when I'm moving with the A/C on.
Thanks for the input

Message: My guage never moved for the 7 yrs I've owned the dak.
Then last summer it started to climb with the A/C on but only about 10 Deg. so I didn't worry about it too much.
But now if I have the 180 Thermostat in the truck and sit in traffic it will over heat.
So far with the 160 in it just runs hot the guage goes up to 180-190.
One day after getting home I put a digital therm. with a thermocouple on the engine and the head temp was reading around 200-210.
Is this normal temp climbing??

Message: I've got a '96 SLT V8 with a 16" electric fan and 180 deg thermostat. My truck will overheat if the AC is on and I'm stopped in traffic. Don't pull your engine apart, just turn the AC off and roll the windows down.
Although the 100 PSI reading is a little low, but not likely due to head gasket. Do a leakdown test to see if you've got weak valvesprings or worn rings, etc.
