Message: Obviously if it just started doing it, then it is not a normal condition of the motor. It does sound like it is your injectors though. While the engine is running, put a few fingers against one of the injectors and you can feel each pulse. Do this with each injector and you will probably notice one, or many of the injectors have pulse patterns that sync perfectly with the ticking sound you are hearing. If you find that it does sync up, its probably not much of a performance issue, but if you'd like to quiet down the engine then throw down some new injectors or have your cleaned. I'd probably get a new set though.

Message: I had a similar sound and it was actually the transmission. Get under the truck and listen right at the oil pan/ bellhousing area. It sounded like a knocking sound. My transmission went out 3 months later. Hope this helps.

The truck will take on a whole new personality

Message: just get louder exhaust and it will drown out the noise...My engine has a knocking sound when it's cold too, except it sounds like it's coming from under the valve covers...it's not loud, and i can only hear it in the cab or if i pop the hood...

Message: I trashed some lifters. They made noise sometimes and then it would be quiet. Then it would make noise again. Put all new ones in it, no more noise.

Message: You could try to run some concentrated fuel injector cleaner through your gas. For fuel system treatments I've always liked the brand Chemtool, but they are not as easy to find as others. I know they have a newly formulated injector cleaner on the market though. Throw some of that in and run the engine really hard for one full tank. I don't think this will do much to quiet them down, but it might. Replacing the injectors is a very easy task. If the noise is a big enough problem I wouldn't hesitate to do it. How much warranty is left on the truck?
