Subject: Cam Problem IP: Logged
Message: We installed the HO cams in my 2001 4.7L, and when we were finished we fired it up and it sounded good so we cut it off to finish hooking up the air box. After we did this we started it and it ran for about 10 secs and just cut off. We checked fuses, fuel and everything looked good except it wasn't getting a spark from the plug. It cranks fine but just won't fire. If you can help me it will be appreciated thanks.

Message: Matt, there is no distributor on a 4.7. Make
sure the cam sensor is installed and tight. Did
it throw a check engine lite??

Message: haha..yea sorry I let the kid outta the closet. hes still learning his way around an engine.
Are you getting power to the coils? I'm not very familur with the 4.7 set up, but check your relays. When you turn the key on are they all clicking over? ASD relay in specific.

Message: Alot of times the crank position sensor will be damaged and cause that problem. If you are not getting spark from the coils then test/replace the sensor and it should start right up.

Message: I had it towed to a local dealership so they could run the diagnostic test, and they said it was the Air Speed Motor and it kept blowing a 30 amp fuse. They had it running and I was going to pick it up yesterday, but when he pulled it outside it popped that fuse again. He said it's something in the electrical system or wiring. He also said that this problem might have came from the new cams and the PCM not getting along. I've never heard of anyone else having this problem. Thanks for the help. Matt

Message: On a semi-related note, do you have to reset the PCM after you install the HO cams? I'm about to have my HO cams installed and would like to know.

Message: Well Amdrew,
the Neg. post on the battery is usaully disconnected when doing work like this, that's what I did, so then we you reconnect it and start it, it runs real funny for a few seconds, as it starts to relearn things, and that essentially resets the PCM by disconnecting the battery.

Message: Thanks Todd. I have a cousin-in-law who is a Dodge tech and specializes in the 4.7. He's going to help (do) the install for me. He wasn't sure how the PCM would know that we did a cam change. I just shrugged my shoulders and told him that no one on this forum mentioned anything about reprogramming the PCM for the new cams.
How does the PCM know that the cam profile is changed and to make adjustments?

Message: Andrew,
Don't make it difficult. The PCM is programmed to run the engine by making adjustments based on the feedback of several sensors. LIke the Throttle positon, oxygen, intake air temp, engine temp, etc.
Even if you didn't take off the battery cable during the install, the PCM would still eventually make adjustments anyway. Remember, in this case, it wasn't the PCM settings that changed to increase the power. It was mostly the duration of the intake valve I believe.
The first minute they're in, the engine, and you will see more power. As a sidenote, due to a change in vacuum, it even makes more cruise control come on smoother!
Godd luck
