 Subject: Fluid level 45RFE

I changed my fluid and filter recently and added 5.5qts of Mopar ATF+4. I checked the dipstick at Idel with the engine running, in netural after I put it in Drive and reverse for a couple seconds
when checked dipstick sometimes its between the low marks(two holes) and below the low marks
I have never been able to get the transsmission hot enough for it to read at the hot marks.
what is the proper procedure to check trany fluid level?
what is the approximate amount for a 4.7ltr 45rfe to take with a flat filter and fluid change?
Autozone said 5.0qts Dodge said 4.5qts

Both whored you. 7-1/2 qts by dropping the pan and then re-filling.
Make yourself drive the truck for a good 30 minutes to heat up the fluid and then check the level. You will not get a good enough reading if the fluid is not heated up. I forget if you check in park or neutral, but it should say on the dipstick which one to have it in to chk the fluid level. If you don't choose the right one, the fluid will not read correctly, if I remember correctly it will read low.

Look my truck is a 2000 dodge dakota sport, bone stock, 45RFE. I am sick am tired of guessing. all of these trucks are the same, what is the amount of fluid used? this is not rocket science right?
dip stick reads check in neutral engine running
at 70' between the cold mark holes
or between the hot mark holes when fluid is around 180'
I towed my car trailer3,000lbs, 60 miles at 70mph with overdrive off and the trany never got hot enought to read between the hot marks. What the phuck?

Chill out dude. I have been thru this already. Like I said earlier, 7-1/2 qts. Believe it or not. Since it sounds like the trans was heated up enough it tells me there is not enough fluid in it if it won't read where it should. Unless there is some kind of leak that isn't visible, but I seriously doubt that.

7 quarts for me. Ok at cold marks - never makes to hot marks, even after long drives.

Ok I check fliud at idle, after start up at 1-2 minutes running time, put truck in drive for 4 seconds then put truck in reverse for 4 seconds end in neutral, leaving truck running.
I pull trans dip stick wipe clean, then stick it back until it fully seats, hild it there for a few seconds, then read it, right above the full mark, at 70' I guess that's correct 5.0 quarts.

My truck is a 2 wheel drive, does that matter, I noticed that some of your trucks are 4 wheel, I am guessing they hold more oil for offroad durability?

if you pull the trans dip stick, at, cold engine running, netrual, how high is it? past the high mark dimple if you add 7 qts right?
