Subject: 360 motor questions IP: Logged
Message: I am thinking of putting a new 360 in my challenger and came to ya'll for some answers. ok first how many horses can I get out of it with cam and head work without, getting to deep in the computer? I was thinking of getting one stroked but I live in houston and there dont seem to be many people that can figure out the computer work needed. this is a weekend car I just want to beat corvetts and mustangs on pump gas not a quarter mile race car. thanks for help

Message: im a chevy guy but ill try and help. 360ci is nice but if you can afford it stroke it. stroking a engine not only gives you hp but alot of torque. so if you stroke it and go with 10:1comp. a good size solid cam. ported heads. aluminum would be very good. roller rockers. edelbrock intake ported to match the heads. a nice 750cfm carb and some 1 3/4 headers with some 2 1/2 inch exaust and a 2500 stall with 3.92s. youll be smokin them all and still be very streetable on pump gas.
cylinder head flow is the biggest area!

Message: you can get some major hp out of a 360,depending on what you do and can afford.i agree with chris, except i,d stay about 9-9.5 comp on pump gas.
question-what yr challenger?because the 70,s did,nt have a computer and the later ones were 4cyl cars.so the computer is,nt a problem.

Message: Is it one out of a truck or the new crate engines? You should be able to make a very stout 360 if you use the mopar pcm with head and cam work. M1 intake would definitely help although you will lose some bottom end grunt. According to Mopar lit. if you use the pcm, cam, headers, and exhaust and a cold air intake they say about 50 hp over stock which is 240-250. The M1 should give you another 15-20 hp. That's 310-320 hp without any head work. Might have to use larger injectors after the head work.

Message: I am also wondering what year Chally?
I have a 73 340 and with very few mods I had no problem what so ever with most Vettes, keep in mind the ZO6 wanst built last time I had her on the road. lol
If your planning a full conversion to MPI I would say save your money and put it into a LA engine, the money you'll save will get you some nice INDY or Edelbrock heads.
Go with a roller cam if you can afford it and a decent 3k or a bit higher stall converter, also 3.91 or 4.10's if you dont plan on much highway use.
Challys are pretty heavy and really need high stall and gears or a big block to get their m-ass movin.
Good luck.

Message: WHATS THE DEAL with the computer? you just said its a 74,it does,nt have a computer, nor does it need one! so why would you use one? you can do so much more to the motor with out the pcm.
if its a 74 challenger,it more than likely came with a small or big block,my guess a 318,because who would put a 360 in the place of a 340 or bb!!!just to race vettes and tangs, don,t figure NO more than this pcm thing.
you can get 300-350hp out of a 318 with a 30 over,cam,intake,head ported and headers.go to www.mancini.com/update 2000 [cheaply]$1000-1500
stroker kit in the $1500 range, plus cam intake etc 400hp+,plus torque.
hughes engines have some 360s[streetable]making some major hp/tq with dyno charts.
muscle motors have engines and kits.
just a few places to check out and ideas.the best thing to do is research and do whats the best for you.[if your like most your trying to get the best bang for the buck]
good luck

Message: Wes didnt say it but he may be looking for great reliability and better highway cruzing in which case a full MPI and OD conversion is in order.
If my Chally wasnt completly correct right down to the VIN stamped on that block I would probably have a 360Mag and OD tranny it it allready.
Goos luck Wes.
