Subject: 4.7 Turbo Kit: Survey, Info, & Input IP: Logged
Message: The short of it: I am going to be the prototype for development of a turbo kit for the 4.7L engine. One of my autoxing friends, who owns a speed shop called "Idaho Speed Center", has made me a proposition to develop a turbo kit for the 4.7 he will market.
So, we'd be interested in some feedback. Idaho Speed Center does a lot of performance work, metal fabrication, welding, suspension, chassis, drivetrain, fuel, exhaust, etc, etc on a full range of vehicles.
We had my truck on the hoist today and we're starting to develop the plan of attack so to speak. I asked him about a timeline and he said whenever I'm ready to commit they'll start tearing into my truck.
Our thinking goes along the lines of offering two kits. Both of which will be designed to work with the factory PCM since options there are pretty much limited.
The kits he would like to offer are summed up as follows:
Kit1: Single turbo, non-intercooled, 5-6psi
Kit2: Single turbo, air to air intercooled, 7-9psi
Option1: We're exploring the possibility of having the complete exhaust system as an additional option. (Both kits by default would include all plumbing/pipes down to the main catalyst.)
Both kits would be sold with all necessary parts, pieces, instructions, sims, etc. We will be doing dyno runs before and after on an otherwise completely stock 4.7. We are considering using either a T04R or GT25 turbo.
Both kits would be sold as "off-road only" kits. The intercooled version will more than likely require a bit more work on the consumers end since the only way to get one in there that will provide proper cooling will be to relocate the radiator/condensor back. However, we will include any brackets, fittings, hoses, etc as required. In order to relocate the condensor, the AC system will have to be evacuated.
Anyway, that's where the project stands and we'd like feedback from any potential customers.
Any thoughts, opinions, etc would be appreciated, as well as what you expect to pay for either kit and if you would be interested in one.
For anyone who is interested, my email is idboi@earthlink.net
Thanks,
Jason aka IdahoRT

So many problems .... So little time

Message: Well I think there are TWO different exhaust set ups on the 4.7 Dakota's. So right there is something that wont be BOLT ON for all 4.7 Daks as far as exhaust goes.

Message: Well let's see. A 4.7 is rated around 235 HP. Kinda under rated if you ask me but that is what it is. Torque is another story though.
Now Duner's Turbo 4.7 is said to be well over 500 HP.
So in that sense, it added MORE HP than what the engine started out with.

Message: Duner's truck has a lot more modifications than just the turbo kit, and he usually runs in the 12-14psi range - he's blown through two motors in the R&D process.

Message: There's nothing wrong with the kit on ebay - it works as advertised.
I broke the 4.7 more than twice - more like 5 or 6 times. I broke two BLOCKS. They couldn't be repaired and I had to get others. Those parts were sacrificed in an R & D effort while I "played" with the turbo setup. The limit for the stock rotating assembly looks to be about 500 hp. Once you cross that line it's just a timebomb waiting to go. The stock rods will only take so much before they begin to bend. I think you could probably run 7-9psi of boost forever though, (350 to 375 hp) without any consequences at all.

I have ONLY found the pistons at KRC, but are pricey!
So I know how you broke the FIRST block with the stuck waste gate. How did you break the second block?????
Also, are you still wowing your toy hauler with this truck???
I hope that mine holds together a bit longer since it's going to be in a car that barely hits the 3,000 Lb mark :)
