Subject: Melted my Rearend! IP: Logged
Message: My rearend was apparently full of water and at about 125 mph it decided to finally go. I worked at a gas station at the time and I guess the guy didn't expect for me to catch his ass so quick. But man was I haulin ass, and all the sudden I felt a slight thud and exactly what it sounded like had actually happened, the pinion lost a tooth. All said , CHECK YOUR FLUID in your rearend because all that keeps it from draining is a rubber plug you can pull out with your fingers...
01' Dak Sport 4.7 5 spd blue club cab, IAT relocated to intake tube, straights behind the cat, TPS adjust to .75 v closed, homebrew SWEET cold air box intake, tb spacer(waste), removed clutch fan, 245 50 ZR 16, dropped 2 and 2

LOL. No offense, dude, but this sounds like something from a bad "B" movie. Have you ever seen "Moving Violations"? Your post sounds like a line from that movie. Rent it and see.

Message: Well, I used 85W/140W HD rearend oil, as far as draining it, ????????????? I know I filled it with the rearend off the truck turned on end/ (with the place where the drive shaft bolts up face down on the ground-- that seemed easiest) it took about 2.5 qts of it, and mine is always wet around the plug, I don't know about another plug for it, but I'm sure you can get an aftermarket cover plate for it that has a threaded plug.. I forgot where I saw one but it was when I was looking for gears for it and I found a company that has them.. About $100 I think..... You can always just take the cover off , let it drain that way, make a new gasket with RTV and fill it with one of those Outboard Motor Lower Unit oil filler pumps with a filler tube on it, that seems like it'd be good for a transmission too...

Message: Can any of these things happen?
1. Dakota hit 125mph?
2. Fill a rear end with fluid on its end?
3. Break a pinion gear at 125 and only hear a "thud"?

Message: Daksmak, YES , a DAK will hit 125+ when the key is turned to the Start position, the speedo is disabled, the clutch is not in so the starter won't grind, and the speed limiter is bypassed, and I guess you would have had to have been there to see how we did it , I filled it before we replaced it under the truck, and turned the whole unit up where the diff cover was facing the sky and pulled the plug to fill it that way.
I like the 4.7 myself b/c of the price I gave for the truck I still come out ahead as opposed to buying a little econo car/truck brand new..
Mine's an 01 and I gave $11,500 for it with 8k miles on it, it looked and smelled brand new for about $10,000 less than what I would have given at the Dealership, and it came with the fender flares, cd player, 16" wheels and a serious motor..
It makes so much noise with the pipes it seems like it should be faster, but it's good enough.
