Message: I did my first old change on my new/used 2000 4.7 Dak. What the hell was dodge thinkin when they chose to put the filter where they did? I thought the filter on my R/T was in a bad place. Anyway, when I got my truck it didn't come w/ an owners manual so I'm verifying that these 4.7's take 6-quarts, correct?
Also, my 2000 has pre-cats, I thought they didn't start that till 2001.

Message: I use an adjustable oil filter wrench that I attach to my 1/2" socket drive w/a approx. 10-12" extension bar. No problems. I only use that to break the seal, then use the 2 liter bottle trick to loosen the rest of the way by hand with no mess. Do a search about the bottle trick for more info. Good luck.

Message: I know exactly what you are talking about Leath. On my first oil change, I thought I was gonna bust a gut trying to get that darn filter off. I went out to Advanced Auto and got one of those oil filter caps that connect to your socket wrench and just fit over the bottom of the filter. And because some idiot engineer that probably doesn't change his own oil decided on the oil filter setup on the 4.7's, I got a socket extender with another elbow joint.
Using all that crap, I was able to finally get it off. Oh, I forgot to mention that we broke my brother's oil filter wrench right off the bat. He had one of those that is like a strap with a handle that wraps around the filter. That didn't last too long. I got scared that I was gonna damage something because I started to notice that the bottom of the filter was turning but the top wasn't! It was getting totally trashed. But we finally got it loose. Then I used the 2-liter bottle method.
Leath, if you still can't get it off, I would take it to the dealership and get them to take it off. I've got some friends that had the same problem and just shoved a screwdriver through the filter and wrenched it off that way. I'm not too sure I'd do it with a brand new truck...not my truck at least. But let the dealership try their hand at it. And if they tear something up, they'll be resposible for fixing it.

Message: On my 4.7, I don't really remember the factory filter being too tight. two years ago though.
I now hand tighten when installing ( I thought that's wht you're supposed to do), and manage to get mine off by hand. I use WIX filters, and the have a non skid area for this.
It's not too bad on the 2wd's, 4.7.

Message: It has the badges. What are most of you guys doing that have pre-cats? If I punch out the main cat will I still pass the sniffer test? When and if you punched out the main cat was there any improvement? Has anyone punched all 3 cats out?
